1988 325 Single Mass Flywheel Conversion

    Hey Guys,

I have a 1988 325 (SUPER ETA). My clutch is pretty burnt and I'm going to be dropping the tranny next week to do my favorite job. I'm going to be swapping out my dual mass flywheel for a single mass AKA "I" flywheel. I'm going to use an "I" clutch disk and pressure plate. Just to be sure before I order my parts, hopefully someone can confirm this but I need to order the 323 TOB, basically this bearing is thicker (30mm) to compensate for the flywheel thickness reduction, given that my transmission has the slightly deeper bell housing.

What i was hoping was that for someone to chime in who has done this (on their SUPER ETA) and can confirm that this is the TOB that I need to order. which is part number: 21511204525 and is 30mm thick.

    Thank you my e30 friends!

Can anyone confirm that you need the 323i TOB on this setup? Thanks guys!

Doesn't the eta use the flywheel for it's reference center? Are you going to swapping in an I harmonic balancer and CPS in the front as well?

    edit:

You can change out the dual-mass flywheel for a single mass flywheel that has the reference slug, but they are both of equivalent weight. To take advantage of the lighter M20B25 flywheel the engine needs to use the front mounted CPS.
Doesn't look like this is a great idea unless you're going all out.

I have the SUPER ETA, there is no reference sensor on the bell housing, it's at the front of the engine.

It's plug n play, just wanted to confirm the TOB is correct.

In that case, why not use a i TOB? I don't know of any difference in the transmission. I'd use all i stuff. I recently swapped my single mass flywheel for a lightweight flywheel (8.5lbs) and was impressed with the difference. You might want to consider getting your i flywheel ground down to 12lbs before you start.

Yeah definitely going to grind the flywheel down some. While all 325 325e and 325i motors are attached to the GetRag 260 tranny, some of the trannys had a slightly deeper bell housing to accommodate for the thicker dual mass flywheel. So i believe you need to a thicker TOB (30mm) when switching to an "I" single mass flywheel when pared with a GetRag that has the slightly deeper bell housing.

Seems like it's not an issue. YMMV.

Just thought I share my results. Successfully converted my SUPER ETA to a single mass flywheel. Used the 323 throw out bearing (30mm) and it works great.

Going through this same issue since I can’t find a duel mass flywheel for my seta just curious on your i flywheel was it different in diameter and did your starter work?
