We had to modify the front coilovers to sit lower in position than a stock E46 to be at proper ride height and to keep the shock towers from sticking out above the hood. Worked out nicely I think...

Details of the newly modified rear suspension arm (I think BMW calls it a Z link) that controls toe alignment.

One last post for now....
After many moons of wrangling and stressing... My Group 5 kit has finally been finished and will be shipped from Europe sometime next week!
Nice on the toe link heim. Is that a 3/4 or 5/8? Much more freedom of movement on compression of the Z arm using a heim than aftermarket bushings for that. Just like the E36 Using the factory slotted toe carrier and aftermarket bushings or limiter spacers doesn't allow much change. The area is really mean to pivot and the heim is about as free as can get while being very direct.
Do you have heim jointed sleeves for the rear camber adjuster? I can give some links if your looking to make your own.

The workmanship on this build is incredible. Please keep up the updates.
Brought the E21 home recently (finally done with all the suspension/cage/chassis work). Here's the last glam shot on the lift... I so wish I had one at the home garage

In the garage, sitting on all four tires for the first time in over a year:

Plenty of room up front for intercooler, radiator, etc.

As stated previously, I decided to go with the Group 5 flares but they haven't arrived yet. Since I still have the group 2 stuff (currently for sale!) I plugged it up there to see how much ground clearance I'm going to have up front... not much! Given that it's so low I'll be adding a cup car air lift system like this one: https://www.stanceparts.com/product/...it-front-rear/

Trimmed the stock dash to fit around the cage. It's looking good, but will be much better with a nice Alcantara wrap finish.

Printed off a template for the AIM MXG display, looks like it will fit in nicely...

Next steps are to locate pedal box, steering column and final seat positions. Then I can bend up and install the tubing for the transmission tunnel, then on to sheet metal!
Thanks for the reply. The threaded end of the heim is 3/4, the eyelet (or whatever it's called) side is 1/2 inch. I actually am looking to make my one upper and lower control arms for the rear. The stock E46 arms are non-adjustable so camber is fixed. Those links would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

The timing of your post was crazy! How are the motorcycle and the San Juans treating you? I wish we could ride together sometime but I sold my Ducati (to help pay for the E21 project) and my fiance subsequently sold her Triumph, so it pains me to say that I am bikeless at the moment.
Thank you for the praise on the car :-)

Thank you, much appreciated! I'm doing my best to update when I get around to doing some work ;-)
Sweet VW bus !
I'll get back to you on the links and post here.

This thing just keeps getting cooler and cooler. Does the hood even clear the wheels?
Thanks man. The bus has been a fun project as well. We bought it a few years ago and it was pretty ratty with, believe it or not, a V8 swap from a Lincoln. We ended up doing a full restoration and remodel of the interior plus a water-cooled 2.5 liter Subaru Legacy engine swap. She cruises so nicely now

Thanks man... it's sure been a fun experience. I've never done any kind of vehicle like this before. There's a lot to learn and a lot to potentially mess up along the way.
The answer to your question is: barely. This is one of the things that keeps me up at night. I have been waiting for months to receive the shipment of the new Group 5 kit so that I can measure and fit the correct wheel size. The goal is to have 18s on all 4 corners but I might have to change the size up front to fit under the fender. Alternatively, I might just have to modify the hood and fenders to be one single piece to make it all fit. The trouble is, even if I go with a smaller wheel, I'm having difficulty finding tires that are both wide enough and have a shorter overall height. It's a dilemma that currently only exists in my head... at least until the kit arrives and I can measure it all out for myself. *crosses fingers*
rear camber arms could make a nicer set similar to these
ECSTuning sells several types
I hate aluminum bar stock for this application so would use steel / moly hands down. Especially with your power output i'd only use steel or moly.
So I'd chose length you need and use these pre made swedged tubes from Speedway
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/5-8-I...ku=91034558-15
combine with favorite heim
I like QA1's stuff; https://www.qa1.net/rod-ends-and-related/rod-ends
I use the part numbers off QA1 and punch it into Speedway motors for better pricing and to combine items for less shipping.
Since E46 at the HUB side you'll want to use all factory "bearing" replacements.
Lemfoerder part number 33321140345 " Trailing Arm Mount Bushing; Rear Upper; Trailing Arm to Control Arm"
These work at both HUB points where the spring perch connects to the hub and where the lower camber arm connects to the hub. Can verify but I'd check to see if also fits the DIFF side of the spring perch I'm not sure.
I bought some here for our X3

I really have nothing to say other than the things some of yall put together are things of beauty. Absolutely nuts.
Where did you source the group 5 body kit from?
Damn man, this build is legit. Keep it up!

Hey Brett,
I am also building an E21 group 2 race car (much more tamed version with a stock motor) and was wondering if you could help me out with group 2 kit selection.
I want to order it from the same french company as you did but I don’t know if I should go with 13 inch or 15 inch version?
Do you know what the difference is? Is one wider than the other?
I will be running 15x9 wheels (-20 offset).
I called them yesterday but the guy who answered the phone did not speak english.
Thank you very much for your help.
Vladimir
Hello all,
It's been awhile since I've posted updates and am doing so now with a bit of a heavy heart. After many years of work, I am sadly having to let go of this project. Life circumstances have changed for me and finishing this car does not seem tenable anymore. I am posting to gauge any interest in the sale of this car.
Here are the full details:
E21 with full tube frame chassis
S54 with turbo intake and exhaust manifolds (DOC Top mount & HPF black powercoated)
E46 M3 front and rear suspension w/ custom Ohlins shocks
E36 M3 5 speed (ZF)
Full Group 5 Fiberglass widebody kit
CAE Ultra Shifter - E46 M3
2 Sparco EVO II seats
If you are interested in knowing more details enough to acquire this project for yourself, please contact me at:
brettkcherry8@gmail.com
I have more photos, full invoices and knowledge about the final design intentions.
