Well, it's been months of nothing and research and procrastinating and more nothing and more research. Today was the first time under the car in awhile but I feel like I've finally got the rearend placement 90% figured out. I am going to the need the help of a machinist for some pieces (if anyone knows one in the Seattle area please let me know) but otherwise I've got a plan that I can execute myself. Here's a few pictures:
This is basically how it will sit in the car.

Rear seatback/firewall removed. Access through this area will be needed for tube framing:

EDIT:
Why are my attachments small? I tried to unclick the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" but then it showed the "broken link/file" icon. Left the box checked and now they are stupid small photos :-/

Did some firewall trimming. Motor should sit about 4 inches aft of the factory firewall.

Plugging away at some more bodywork. Filled the big holes in the floor and capped off the OEM gas tank filler thingy. I'll be using a fuel cell fillable from the trunk so that access point was unnecessary.

So, it's been awhile. Decided to go a slightly different direction with how the E46 suspension will be tied into chassis. Finally seeing some progress after it sagged for a long time...

Will the steering rack (oops, shaft) clear the intake manifold? Sweet project, ought to drive like a dream when you're done

Wow, you're not messing around. Keep it up and please update this regularly.
It should!
It's all stock E46 stuff under the hood, so it should fit well and play nicely with each other.

I will be doing my best for sure. This forum has been a big resource for me, I'm happy to give back as things progress on my build.
One more... Some preliminary mockups for tubing the rear.
I really like the layout of this so far. By cutting the floor and moving the cage hoop back mid quarter windows are you going to move the seating there and move the pedal box back? If so I really like where your thought process is on this
update when make progress, looks great so far

With a booster delete and cutting more I contemplated this before our cage. Motor would sit behind the subframe but the seat needed to sit almost back seat and pedal box moved. the difference was about 8-12 more inches than what we've got so far on our project. I drew a line in the sand of cutting and that was the end of it
Best project I've heard of BMW wise was a e36 where driver sat back seat with pedal box moved over a foot so he wasn't on the bell housing. Shoveled a LS V8. I think Vorshlag also had such a car at one time. Complete rocketship on track.
It's stuff like this that drove us to move our motor back. Most hear of 2" or so, but I'll take my 5.75" and run with it
Awesome project man will be sub'd for sure on this.

Hellz yes and I would of had to make a reverse link for the transmission unless sitting far enough back. Right now there's maybe a 1" link for the shifter on ours.

Tight fit on the passenger side motor mount.
Hockey pucks are fun :-)
More cage tie in. Rear-end is assembled and in proper placement.
Wiiiiiide!

Lots of cutting needed here to make the 18s fit.
