EML and ASC lights on? - solved

During the past couple of days, while the car is warm and I'm coming to a slow coast eg. towards red light or in a parking lot, the car shuts dies OR the EML and ASC lights both come on and I loose most power. A subsequent restart may/may not resolve this...or it re-occurs during the next coast down. Heavier throttle and acceleration seem to help cure it for a period of time.

Last night after a re-start, it started revving up and down between 1-2k rpm by itself repeatedly until I shut it down.

What could it be? Dirty throttle bodies? Fuel pumps? Bad gas? Loose connection somewhere? DME's? Something else?

because of the varying symptoms...could it be your batteries dying? Or perhaps dying alternator (which would then cause low batt voltage) since higher revs seem to help?

Then it wouldn't start after sitting overnight, no? Or have a weak turnover. But, she cranks like a banshee...

Snap, you're right. Unfortunately it looks like you may have to start the dreaded diagnostics process...unless you're able to plug it into some diag software? Have you noticed if it's only one bank that's shutting down?

Surging possibly a failed/failing Fuel Pressure Regulator - run car for a minute, shut down and then pull vacuum line from each FPR and examine for wetness caused by leaking/ruptured FPR diaphagm - if vac lines arent wet or fuel doesnt squirt out of FPR vacuum outlet, they are ok. Other cause of surging I have seen here is a bad MAF.

Thanks Tom...will check the FPR's. They were changed along with both MAF's a couple years ago.

Luis: No, the engine seems to run fine....slightly rougher, but not like when it's in LHM. Just, no power at all when the EML/ACS lights on.

Charge the batteries overnight. Unlock the OBC and you can see real-time output from the Alternator. That will be the easiest way to eliminate charging system issues.

Re-surfacing this thread to see if anybody has any new ideas....

The same symptoms now occur immediately after starting the car....EML and ASC lights come on....and it either:

    1) Runs normal or with high idle or in Limp-Home mode or
    2) Begins to surge between 1250-1500rpm or even surged to redline at one point. NO throttle reponse at all (as if it's disconnected).

I initially thought it was DK motors. Just installed new units from Wuffer with no change. The car is not driveable. Any ideas before I tow it to the dealer for diagnosis????

Towing to dealer is a very bad idea.. you gonna have a bad time if you go that route.
Do you have any sort of means of diagnostics to see the codes? I suspect EML computer could be involved.

Had a similar problem on an e34 530i. I'm not at home but have a friend turn the car on and watch the DK motors. IIRC there is still a physical cable that controls the ASC flap. It's possible that cable is old/rusty/binding and when it opens the flap it gets stuck. I got a car free that the owner couldn't diagnose with this exact problem and it was a $30 cable. So check the ASC system first.

Agreed. INPA and an ADS cable would be a great place to start and easy to setup/operate. Sounds like a floating input somewhere (open sensor).

Towing to dealer bad? Lol, yeah bad for the wallet!!

Been considering getting diagnostic setup for a while....but have not made the leap.

Where do I begin? I do have an older laptop with win xp. Links to software/cable purchase???

    It runs: dme's ok
No throttle response ..... EML or pedal. No stable revs....would start looking at EML.

Did you look at the inline FUSE in the trunk..... if that one is "half" faulty you could get voltage drops (the computers do not like that).

    - - - Updated - - -

And diagnostics software (full laptop setup with dis, inpa, etc ....) is free......I build a full set for our club, you just need a dell 830 laptop and cable (lots of E31 owners already using it).

Haven't checked the inline fuse yet. That's next...

Where is the EML located? Is it next to the DME's? Guess I will need to get the software going and run diagnostics....

I will put out the offer that I have a diagnostic computer built by our old forum Moderator when he was doing such a thing. If you would like to use it, I am also located in Toronto. PM me

Did you do "Stomp Test", turn on ignition, when eml light goes off step on the gas pedal 5 times for right (1-6 cyl) or 6 times for left (7-12) side. Then count the blinks from the "Check Engine" light. It will give you a 4 digit code. There are tables available in the forum.

No, because the Check Engine light is not lit up. Only the EML and ASC (Traction Control) lights are on.

Will the stomp test or Peake Tool work for these?

NO ans NO, you need proper diagnostics. IMO, your throttles are bad, step 1. Step 2 your EML computer is bad.

Ok, so I finally got a laptop running with INPA and DIS and come up with the following:

    INPA:

    1) EML: 2 errors: 1) Internal error control unit 2) unknown error location

    2) DME 1: Error 73 Speed signal
DME 2: Error control unit or trottle valve

    DIS:

    1) DME (cyl 1-6): No errors
    DME (cyl 7-12): Error 73: Road-speed signal
Explanation: Effect in the event of a fault:
-with HG: bucking when driving at constant speeds close to idle speed (EML SG controls to idle speed)
-loss of power (EML SG limits DK- potentiometer angle)
    -FGR has failed

    2) EML: Error 9: EML-system fault warning lamp (The EML SG has detected and set a fault in the EML warning lamp.
Error 8: Internal control-unit fault (A system fault has been detected during the control-unit self-test)
-The engine power output is reduced by limiting the opening speed and the DK angle
-The EML warning lamp lights up
Notes: If the EML SG detects a fault in the memory chips during operation, the fault "8 Internal control-unit fault" is stored
Possible causes: - Power supply of the EML SG
    - Battery condition bad
    Test: -Clear fault memory
-After taking the car for a test run, call up memory again
-If the fault has been stored again, replace the EML SG

So what do you guys think? EML unit itself is at fault and needs replacing? Anybody have a spare one?
