The S256 crushes a GT3076 in every way. The turbine is a much more efficient design and can handle the exhaust flow of a 6cyl engine. For a cheap reliable 500whp or less this is a rockstar budget turbo IMO.

The S256 would be a great turbo to pair up with the new Steed mani too. The S257SXE wold be sechs.

It fucking sucks how many choices there are. On one hand, I want a 400-450 streetable set up. On the other hand, I don't want to limit myself significantly down the road if I want to make more power..
Wait until you exhaust the S256. Its quite capable. 450rwhp will not be tapping it out.

I think the OP is on a tight budget. MLS headgasket, TCD manifold, etc. No $1500 turbos.
Correct! $1500 would be more than I have spent on this entire project at this point lol.
I'm going to just be happy with the s256. It seems like a solid turbo that will give me everything I wanted going into this build. Fast spooling and an easy 400-450 with room for a bit more. Reliability is priority here, more so than anything else. The BW should give me that and satisfy my power goals. Guess I can't ask for anything else.
Especially when I have budgeted $3k for this build INCLUDING a brand new short block with forged pistons.
I think I'm getting ahead of myself and getting caught up in thinking about trying to make big power years from now and forgetting about my current short-mid term goals.

I already have the short block man, so that isn't really up for debate on that end. Everything listed in the OP I already have or have ordered. So the current price total is accurate.
But the short block was $2050. Arias forged pistons, all new bearings, seals, arp rod bolts, arp main studs, polished crank, new freeze plugs, squirters, magnafluxed rods (stock) , Hastings nitrided rings, line honed to spec for pistons, timing cover and block decked, new chain guides, probably forgetting some.

My turbo system was only about $2000 by this method . . . after I sold all my supercharger stuff.

I already had a motor very much like yours, rebuilt shortblock with aftermarket forged pistons. But I bought some fancier parts, like new GT3582R, Boostlogic and mount, stainless ic piping and Bell intercooler and stainless 3.5 exhaust, 60 lb NickG tune, Southbend clutch, etc. And I had better stuff to sell. But if you are just counting price difference, I did better than you.
The only prices that mean anything to anyone else are what you actually paid for everything your are using as part of your turbo system. If you have posted those, that is helpful. The reality, as others have pointed out, is that a turbo system costs more than $3000. About the minimum for everything, and this include getting good prices and buying some used stuff is $4000 for a good 500 rwhp system. Hopefully this will come down in time and more and more cars are done and more used parts are around and tuning gets cheaper.
Sure its fair if all you care about is how much out of pocket you are.
Again, the only thing that matters to anyone else is what the turbo stuff actually costs. Report that rather than how much out of pocket you are. If you beat $4k for a dyno proven 500 rwhp system including clutch, flywheel, downpipe, exhaust, turbo, manifold, intercooler, piping, blowoff valve, wastegate, headgasket, arp studs, hoses and fittings and couplers, and injectors and hfm and tune, etc., then you are doing very well. cmzwirner had the $4000 results and did a detailed post.

So I at some point will re arrange my price break down. I think the built short block sort of skews things because a healthy s52 will handle my power goals 400-450whp(possibly 500 in the future) and I certainly didnt need a new block. Ive always wanted a new engine, so I splurged on that.. What I want to do is give people an idea of how (relatively) inexpensively a turbo m3 can be put together and still use name brand parts and not cheap out on anything essential. I want to show that someone with a healthy m/s5x can put together a solid turbo set up for $3k or so. As of now I still have $500 or so left to meet that goal. We will see.
As of NOW I have spent $2500 on the turbo build, that includes a new tuning package, clutch kit, HG, ARPs, etc etc but not the built short block. That ALSO includes two turbos, which I will leave as of now because I think it depicts the fact that anyone(especially a noob like me) is going to make mistakes and have set backs.
