While I agree with the 700 marker, sure. But under 600, i wouldn't bat an eye. I'd run stock pistons all day at those levels. I think the smart move in this is to stay under 600, or at 600. While I have forged pistons, I went above and beyond the 600 marker.
There are boat loads of guys running stock pistons , under 600 and their fear is the rods. Tons. The real problem becomes greed. Wanting more then 600. At the 500 marker on a hard hitting turbo, like a 35r, your rods are at risk.
I totally agree on the 6xx and above tho. 300-600 I wouldn't bother if money is an issue. Pistons+rings+machine work+filing rings+lot more time. Rods can be changed in an hour with motor plucked and head off.

Yeah 100% agreed. I would also file the oem piston rings. Some evidence showing oem piston rings can butt and break the lands.

I personally think doing machine work and what not is the right way to do it. But certainly you can just get drop in pistons, ball hone the cylinder walls and you're off to the races without any machine work what so ever.
I just don't see the point in going anywhere near 600 with stock anything.
Yeah, people have been making 500-600 on stock internals for many many years. There are loads of guys running around with trm/TT/Technica kits and diy kits with just a mls or cutring/spacer. The bulk of F/I e36's out there the owners don't want to be cracking the engines open. Maybe the handful of guys here myself included go for the glory and invest stupid money into 20year old pos. But we are the minority.

So it keeps getting better.
The main cap on the bearing that got messed up is totally screwed up. It got distorted and now the bearing tang doesn't fit and the main stud won't screw back into the hole in the block.
So I tore down my spare 2.8 today and will be taking it and my pistons to the machine shop and have them bore out the 2.8 to 86.5.
Basically the only thing I'll get to re use is my s52 crank.
This keeps getting better and better...
Life was simple with 500hp huh ?

I was just buggin'. You will often find you will have no money and all the time or all the money and no time. I have all the parts I need and no time due to too much work and family needs..... same same really...... with the end result of no boost

I repainted the strut towers today. It looks so nice I'm gonna repaint the rest of the bay while the engine is out.
