Tore the rest of the block apart today. Got the crank out and noticed something weird on the 7th main bearing (rear most) it was messed up pretty good. Fortunately the crank survived, the crank journal under this bearing is immaculate. Every other bearing is perfect and all the rod and main journals are perfect.

Pics below , any idea what caused this? A result of the bent rod?

The hammering of the pistons against the crank shaft could have something to do with it. Also, detonation can be hard on main bearings.

Thats not detonation damage........ i can tell you that for sure. Looks like something more like out of balance or trash in the bearing some how.

Looks just like the front main bearing out of mine did. I would suspect it's due to the crank deflecting as the counterweight leveraged against the bottom of the piston

My guess is from the bent rod. A twisted rod might change its force on the crank from even to uneven.

Or maybe the underpants gnomes snuck into the engine and hammered on that crank like mining for coal ?

That engine ran before you tuned it, meaning the detonation event could have occurred previously.

The uneven wear across the surface does look like the crank was flexing. I've had a cracked crankshaft that produced similar damage to the rear bearing.

Agreed, i was just saying it wasnt detonation.

Its weird uneven wear so Balance becomes the question. Balance like from a rod creating non-equal forces or something out of dynamic balance like the clutch.

I think its a great move. Rods fail quick. But if tuning is good, screw it, keep the stock pistons. Rods are drop in and go.
Where forged pistons require machine work, lots more money to install those.

Unfortunately I have an 86.5mm bore. So I'm forced to get forged pistons.

On the other hand I am going with 86.5mm JE 9.0:1 pistons. I'm going to just ball hone the cylinders and drop in these pistons and call it done.

I really disagree.. its 1000$ you wont remember in 2 years when your still boosting around at 700whp without problems... or worrying about it.. ESPECIALLY if you are already opening up the motor... wait a couple weeks and save up the money..

If you are pushing 700whp on factory pistons i dont see a world where you can drive without worry.. theres just so little tolerance..

We have all done it... tried to use the factory motor.. i sell tunes all the time to people doing this.. some people want to push 5-6-700... we all have certain expectations from it too.. but people are happier once they dont have to worry about the motor anymore and maybe im just getting older but an additional 1000$ for piece of mind and actually enjoying the car every day i want to is money well spent..

    /ramble..

Problem is now that I will have a fully built motor I'm going to want to make 800+ .... I should have started doing heroin. Would have been cheaper. Not too late though. Might part out the m3 and buy a bunch of heroin....
