    Yeah I got that.
Machine shop suggested a wall clearance of 0.0035" due to my power goals so I went with that.

The second ring usually has a hook or sharp edge on it. The hook always faces down. Any mark on a ring such as a letter or a dot usually faces up. When in doubt call the manufacturer. They must go in the right direction or it will smoke like a chimney

Deal, lets get this ball rolling.
I'm kind of in a hurry so if you could ship your telepathy via next day air that'd be great. Just send me a PayPal invoice.

So according to JE spec sheet my gap should he 0.017" top ring and 0.018" second ring. Those gaps seem pretty tight to me, should I go with that or open them up a bit more?

Considering the power you want to go for I would do something like .019 and .022

    This ^^
Also go buy a fine nail file. After cutting the rings, take a file gently to it. Also remember to only file one side of the ring.

Another note, I know they say not to touch the oil control rings, but mine were too tight. Not the center one, but the top and bottom one.

Make sure you check the gap in the bore. Take a piston, flip it over and push down the rings inside the bore to square them up. Take your time, you will start filing them slowly being scared, then you will get a feel for how much needs to come off and you will tear ass through them. First set will take the longest. 4th piston will take 1/4 of the time the first did.

    Good deal.
Yeah I'm using one of my old pistons with a ring on it to push the new rings down.

I'm doing all the test fitting in my old block since it's 86.5 as well and I'll be doing all final fitting in the new block.

    Good product.

Look at the Wiseco ring compressor sleeve. You literally just push the piston in the tapered sleeve. Totally worth the money. Old school ones can crack the rings if not "just right".

I'll probably get that. Sucks that it can only be used for one bore size but hell, I obviously don't do this very often so what the hell. It does look like a much easier ad safer tool than the adjustable ring compressors.

I'd let you use mine, but I'm going to be needing it shortly. I think they are only $25. So wouldn't be worth me shipping it to you and back.

I used to struggle a bit until I built this last motor. I too acquired the Wiseco sleeve and I totally agree with how easy it is to use. Like Butters said, oil up the rings/piston sides/cylinder wall/compressor sleeve and the piston slides in like a wet hooker's snatch!!

Ah yeah I'm def ordering one.
So it's a good idea to lube up the rings and pistons and cylinder wall with some 5w30?
