They are not cheap in my area ☹️
I bought one for $450, 2007 with 80k if I remember right. A copart linked junkyard had it at $620 but I had a contact at a local affiliated yard that had it transferred and sold it to me at their cost. Higher mileage ones seemed readily available in the $450 range if I was willing to drive 1-2 hours.
Another possibility for you is to patiently look for one with a broken trans mount or selector shaft ear that you could weld. Maybe try eBay. There was also a guy an hour away parting a 535i that would have sold the trans for $400 if I pulled it, but it was winter and the car was outside so I declined.
i got one from co-parts for 350.00 plus 50.00 for core and plus tax.

In case anyone following needs a clutch set up, my competition twin disc is for sale. It has been an excellent clutch that has now outlasted multiple ZF transmissions and still has tons of life left. $450 shipped and never need another clutch set up behind a stock e36 ZF trans.

I still think it'a funny BMW makes an OEM transmission that holds more than most *built* aftermarket manuals.
The ZF 5-speed is the high power tranny swap for Miata folks.
What clutch will you be using? and will you be using the adapter to mate the transmission? I already have the same 6 speed but just waiting to hear from someone who is using a twin disk and not using the adapter. This person is still building his without the adapter and will be using a twin disk. Just waiting for him to finish and see how it goes. https://bmw.spoolstreet.com/threads/...build-vs.5992/

This man speaks the truth.
My car was ok with normal street tires running 26 psi with 6266. Once I install sticky tires, the 320z transmission did not lasts more than three highway pulls at 22 psi.
Doing 6 speed swap now.
It can break, too. The most durable option would be a T56 Magnum, but it costs about 4 times as much as a used GS6-53. A Samsonas dog box is even more expensive. A built Ford automatic conversion is also more expensive than a GS6-53 conversion.
Im skeptical about it but I don't know if it would be or not. I was mainly referring to it being stronger than most aftermarket manuals. The only ones that I can really think of that would for sure be weaker than a GS6 would be a T5 or a T10. There is lots of stuff available for domestic stuff that will hold up to 1.3 second 60 foots pass after after pass.
Got my SPEC twin disc pucked clutch set up a couple days ago. We will see how gangster I am when I try and drive this... should be interesting.

How much did that clutch cost you? Look like a great clutch.
