HERE ARE THE SYMPTOMS:
I was driving one day and the engine started sputtering for 5 seconds.
Then went back to normal so I kept driving.
When it happened the second time I pulled over.
Again it went back to normal.
I then was parked for 15min at idle and it started sputtering again
Then the engine shut off.
I tried to restart and it would just sputter for about 10 seconds
Then shut off again.
In all this time the CEL gave me code P0015 (intake camshaft sensor)
When I cleared the code, I was never able to get the code to come back
And still would crank, sputter and shut off again.
I towed the car home and figured I'll take a look in the morning.
In the morning the car started without a problem.
I changed the intake camshaft sensor anyway.
The car drove fine for a week.
The symptoms returned and did the exact same thing but this time NO CODES.
I had the car towed home again.
Being that I had a Benz that did this and it was the crankshaft position sensor.
I replaced the crankshaft position sensor.
Still no go, won't start and now it doesn't even sputter anymore.
It just cranks but won't start.
Still no codes on the CEL.
I pulled a plug and checked for sparks and it sparks.
I pulled the fuel line off the injector rail and a little gas dripped out.
I then tried to start with the fuel line out of place and NO GAS comes out.
This made me think it was that fuel pump.
I replaced the fuel pump and still NO GAS comes out of the injector rail or hose.
At this point I'm at a loss as I still have no CEL codes to work with.
ANY ADVICE THAT CAN BE GIVEN ASAP IS APPRECIATED....
I would start with the fuel pump pressure relay........it's the pale green one that's usually in the rear of the car on the passenger side. That's what it sounds like to me.
This pertains to an 2011 528i -I would think that a 2008 would have the same setup, I could be mistaken. Sorry for the delay but I just got off work........- there is a fuel pump control module (EKPM) probably under the back seat area or behind the rear seat back. It PWM controls the fuel pump for output, connected via CAN or LIN (can't remember which) from the DME. EKPM monitors current draw and pump speed, DME reports faults as needed.
Sorry but I have no test equipment other than the ODB CEL checker. Are you saying that there is NO FUEL PUMP RELAY in the 2008 528xi? I've checked the engine compartment, the glove box and the trunk and I can't find that sucker anywhere. I've read that a faulty Fuel Pump Relay may be the cost so I'd like to replace it and give it a shot, but can't find it. Any idea where this relay may be?
Depending on where you live autozone rents (for free) a fuel pressure gauge you can at verify or rule out fuel issue. Have you tried to start the car with the mass airflow sensor disconnected? If not try that as well.
So I had same problem. I’m not a Mechanic but am good with fixing all my cars. So I thought I had bad fuel pump as well. Worked on it all day volt tested at pump ok. Unhooked fuel line at pump turned key and got fuel shooting out so figured pump was ok but still wouldn’t start. Sprayed starting fluid in air box and it would run, pulled plugs and they were bone dry. Anyway I was going after my relays. Fuel relay behind glove (green) and then I noticed a clicking noise in trunk as my battery had dies from all the starts. Well I pulled that black relay in trunk above battery and tapped on it w wrench and put back in. BAM!!!!! Car started . Running a lol tough and throwing codes like Brady throws touchdowns but I figured I’d post my situation here because this is where I came to find all of my answers and diagrams etc. hope this may help someone. Thanks D.J.
