How do you plan on opening up the 82mm hole in the flange that the 85mm TB will be mounting to?

Good question - but are they really perfectly matched? The TB gasket is several mm larger in diameter than the TB itself - it would be an easy answer once it's all appart.

I ordered a used TB from a 745. It arrived and it is the "627" part, not the "308". I measured with a ruler and the inside diameter is not more than 83mm. Not the greatest tool for measuring but I would say that replacing ours with a 627 is not worth it. has anyone measured the 308?

    The OE parts do match.

So what exactly was the measurement? OP state's the 308 is ~84mm. Was the 627 not 3.25" ID or was it close to 3"?

The 627 is 82mm ID which is 3.23" ID. Same as the m62tu TB. I didn't read close enough. I thought all N62 TBs were 84mm. I'll have to exchange for a 308.

    308:

    627:

Gasket is the same. That wall definitely looks thinner on the 308 part, so it's probably at least a couple mm wider.

Thanks so much for sharing, I'm interested but since I'm in Argentina, I was starting the off the shelf parts investigation to see what I could find here. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
I'm confused with one thing: The connector is the same but the pins are in different places, right? I may try my luck in removing the pins and move them around.

    Thank you!

The X5 has at least one TB that seems identical to E39 M62TU by eye but has a slightly different connector shell shape, Juan. So... I dunno about this one but if it has a different housing I won't be surprised and if so perhaps the X5 connector will be a donor candidate.

I see, thanks JC! Maybe I can use the connector out of a crapped up M62TU TB and make a pigtail loom so I don't have to cut the original harness... Opening up the N62 TB to replace female connectors seems too much work especially since they only come in the press fitted cover flavor... or maybe I'll just splice and I'm giving it too much of a thought. =)

What might be possible is the pins may be the same so you can just unclip the pins and swap into the other "carrier shell"? IIRC the style of connector is very much similar just with the asymmetrical "key" part of the shape on a different side. I'm not home now or I would get a pic. This is all suppositional or course - lets see somebody post up what the actual TB socket is...

Oh I get it now, mirrored keyway... yes, most likely the pins are going to be the same, so I can just buy a pigtail from eBay and swap the actual crimped connectors in the new male shell.

I don't think the pins are the same. The N62 throttle body connector looks more like the M54 connector. Pins are a bit wider

    M62

    N62

The M62 looks like it has MQS contacts; N62 looks like MCP1.5k contacts.

This looks like to be the male variant of the M62 connector. Not sure which key is the correct one: http://www.te.com/commerce/DocumentD...f%7F1-967587-3

Hmmm seems you're right M. Shouldn't be hard to get a connector but not a simple repin. Again I'd dig my parts out but not home.

I'd love to see if the 84-5mm TB is really a worthwhile upgrade. DUDMD said he has not come across one in the wild so I guess its pretty untested. OP, update please?

    For the Throttle body connector:

    Pins: http://www.digikey.com/product-detai.../A107016CT-ND/
Seals: http://www.digikey.com/product-searc...words=964971-1 or http://www.digikey.com/product-searc...words=963530-1 (depending on wire thickness.. I think either would be okay with 20AWG TXL wire)

    For the harness connector:

Just updated my post. It was a little ambiguous as to whether or not the pins I selected would work with the VW connector. So I just linked to a kit that contains everything

I may or may not also create a custom cold air intake as well, depending on interest. Let me know!

Bringing this thread up again as I am interested in using the N62 TB.

I wonder if this TB spacer from ECS would work in place of the M62 TB spacer since the opening is too small as stated earlier in this thread. Its expensive might might add some gain too (or probably just marketing hype).

    https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E64-650i-N62_4.8L/Engine/Intake/Throttle_Body/Spacer/ES2207823/

After looking at this again, it appears the spacer is much different since the OEM is wider and goes from 6 to 4 bolts.

Guessing no one has found a solution to the smaller spacer opening.

OP - do you have any updates to share?

When I installed the Dinan TB I opened up the ID of the spacer plate.

Ah cool. Do you mind sharing how you opened it up? (what tools or process) I have a good friend that has a machine shop and could probable make me a customer spacer but if the plastic OEM piece can be opened up thats seems easier.

I used a curved file, then a round sanding drum on a drill press, and finished it up by hand.
