    E32 TRE fuel pumps in a 750iL

As part of preventative maintenance, I wanted to replace both fuel pumps. Filters I did a few days ago, now onto the pumps. I used this site as reference:
    http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/fu...t/Fuelpump.htm

I looked at some pumps, specs. Etc. Shogun was a big help and I narrowed it down to a TRE-432. Spec for spec, its overall slightly better than stock. Flow rate and pressure are rated higher. But I have not found that anyone has installed one (or two) of these before. Seems others opt for a larger capacity pump. That pump is smaller in diameter. Also some pumps have much bigger inlets so the stock dual filter will not work. And the connectors may need to be changed. None of these issues are present in the TRE-432. Not to mention that at $40 per pump, its very affordable!

As for install. I really recommend soaking the nuts for the sending unit at least a day before working on it. I actually did mine a month before when I was deep cleaning the trunk. Then again just before pulling them. No issue with removal considering the massive amounts of rust!

The write up from Sean's and Johan's site is really good, but my 1992 seems to have a difference in design. Instead of soft fuel lines to the filters, mine has metal. This made it very difficult to move the lines out of the way to pull the sending unit out. I first discovered this when working on the fuel filters. The sending unit need to come out and install near vertical to clear items in the tank. A vent tube and the fuel fill inlet. Against my judgement, I strong armed them out of the way. All went well, but next time I would disconnect at the filters. Basically make pumps/filters a single project.

My screen may have been replaced once. Dirty, yes, but not very discolored (car sat for over 7 years).

No clue what that o-ring is for/from. Ideas?

    The TRE pumps installed.

Sadly one of the power connector studs snapped!!! TRE is sending out a replacement pump tomorrow. But this means I need to dive back into the tank and do this over again. There is a chance that will not happen until spring unless we have a warm spell. So for now, I have one old and one new pump running the car. Also I am strongly considering buying a new sending unit.

So on the TRE-432 it is confirmed now that the original pre-fuel pump filter/screen fits, good to read. Also just for info, most E36 aftermarket fuel pumps fit the 750, they are similar in size to the TRE.

Instead of soft fuel lines to the filters, mine has metal. This made it very difficult to move the lines out of the way to pull the sending unit out. I first discovered this when working on the fuel filters.
That is standard, see here the drawing: from the sender to the pipes short HOSE, item 19 Fuel hose 8X13MM from 11/1988 16121180409
then come the PIPES to the filters , just before the filters short hoses again, after the filters short hoses again and then pipes again towards the engine bay.

^ Would it bee a year change? I have found two write-ups, both show soft lines all the way.

I have never seen a different version, but maybe possible. However that should be shown in realoem when checking year by year, and for the link above to realoem I extra selected a 1992 750iL US version.
Or someone modified that on your car, another difference again on your car to other E32 750. I remember when you mentioned the e-box modules.
What is the VIN of that car?

I just clicked your link, I see it shows both rubber lines and tubes. Rubber hoses are 15 and greyed out. So both are factory. Its either a year change or something to do with some weird option.

3 years ago when I replaced my original installed 1988 built Bosch fuel pumps, I took some measurements of the Bosch pump for future reference. One of my wrenching buddies had China made fuel pumps for E36 here, I had new Bosch on stock.
In case someone does no want to invest that much for a good quality Bosch fuel pump, the cheapo China made E36 and E34 fuel pumps also work (lifetime I do not know, also the check valve inside the pump might die earlier, see here
    http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/showt...ight=fuel+pump

The pump just must have the correct dimensions to fit into the fuel pump unit, as both M70 pumps clip into the unit and the bottom part of the unit has an extra cut out for the inlet tube of the pump and all that goes into the plastic container/bracket fixed at the bottom of the fuel tank. The tube dimension is also important so that the original dual pre-filter fits = 1 filter with 2 connections for both pumps. So if you want to buy the cheapo pumps, here are the details of the original Bosch pump I removed:
    body diameter 43.5mm
body length 94.00m (without the attached tubes and the part for the wire connection = metal body only)
total length of body from end to end of the connection pipes 146.5mm
length of inlet/suction pipe at the bottom 15.2mm, outer diameter of bottom pipe 12.0mm
outlet pipe at top outer dia. 6.2mm, at the top of that pipe a small enlargment to dia. 8.9mm (to keep the fuel hose tight), Length if outlet pipe 20.0mm
New up to date part number for M70 pumps is: 16141179710, Bosch 0 580 453 010 was written on the old pump.
And just for fun I also compared the weight of the original 1988 built pump from Bosch = 475 gramms, and a new cheapo chinese made we had which fits for the M70, that is 315 gramms.

The chinese made fuel pumps (offered on the auction *bay for E36) some of my wrenching buddies have installed on their 750 now last already approx. 5 years, no problems.

I just looked up the pumps on eBay. As mentioned, I had paid $40 each shipped. They are down to just $25 each!
