    M60 Oil Lines

    Hey all,

I am going to be ordering parts on my 530i in order to fix a leak on the driverside. If i leave a car overnight, theres a noticable amount of oil sitting right under the alternator. If it sat for a couple of hours, its a drop or two. My alternator is caked with grime so i can somewhat confidently assume its the oil lines leaking. I might as well replace them and the power steering hoses (also a small, less serious leak but might as well). Looking up pictures of the oil lines, the top two that connect side by side to the filter housing to the block seem like they are made up of material that wouldnt leak unless they were cut. My question is, is it unnecessary to buy new ones? Would new orings alone do the trick? Its a $100 difference. I am going to buy the third, longer oil line that runs under the housing to the engine, but was curious of the top two. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to revive such an old thread but i am in the process of replacing these oil lines as well and I am wondering if there is a need to replace those 2 hoses. Is only the bottom hose need replacing and the orings of the top 2 hoses? Are the top 2 hoses made of material that leaks oil and requires replacement? Thanks in advance. Seems like an annoying job and definitely do not want to do it twice.

If the leak is coming from a split line, then you would obviously need to replace the lines as well. I ended up doing this procedure to my 540i and I didn't want to mess with it ever again so I coughed up the money for new OEM oil lines and obviously new o-rings from FCP Euro. Total cost was $162.74 + shipping and I never need to spend that again with FCP's lifetime warranty.

If you can have the car be down for a week or so, may as well remove the lines and inspect them if money is super tight. I wouldn't want to mess with it down the road again though, that job gave me lots of cuts, cramps, and bruises hah!

Check out my thread, there is a picture that shows exactly what the lines look like:

    Good luck.

That's the only sensible option. Do it right or don't bother.

Option number two is buy my 540, which has new filter housing hoses and o-rings. In conjunction with other stuff...

Haha i am not trying to cheap out on it on purpose. Just that if the hoses are made of a material that isn't going bad or degrading, then it seems sensible to only replace the orings. And the 3rd oil line I will replace and buy new washers and bolts. It leaks by drips. But it is not leaking like a faucet.

Well, ima bite the bullet and replace the 3 lines. Any sensors I should replace while I am already going to be there?

P.S. As much as I would looove to throw in a b40 in here, i don't have any dedicated garage to start a project. I go to a DIY place that you pay hourly to work on your car.

Braided steel lines can develop leaks, even if they don't move much, but it's not common. The third line (rigid) should never leak except from the crush washers. If you can afford the downtime, I'd give the whole area a good degreasing and look carefully for the source of the leak.

The third line has a small rubber segment too.

The stainless braid on the outside of the large hoses is just for reinforcement. They are still rubber hoses underneath that braid.

You can replace the o-rings on both sides, or another option is to have a local hydraulics shop make you two lines using the existing end/fittings on the current lines.
