My worry is a 4.4L might be passed off as a 4.6L and one would not know until the intake manifold was removed and that might be too late by then.

Totally possible. With the asking prices involved, totally possible.

When I was shopping, a guy in the UK claimed to have an Alpina 4.6 for sale, acoustic cover and all. Then he screwed up when he told me it was in an X5 originally. He showed me a picture of a 4.4 e53. Fail.

This sticker is the other way if you're lucky enough to find an engine that hasn't had it blown off by a pressure washer after it was pulled. It's located on the back of the driver's v/c.

Cool, they're out there. The engine I bought came from a car that was vandalized. Key scratched, lights and windows busted out so insurance totaled it. Still, it was expensive compared to a 4.4.

I'll try to keep them interesting in that case.

Still too lazy to replace the o2 sensors. I got back in the rhythm of work and haven't even ordered them. I feel like such a failure. One more dyno is all I need to see if all this was truely worth (what I expected) the effort.

I will say, that loppy cam makes the car sound like a whole different thing. Makes me feel like Detroit had a hand in the build. I like it.

So interestingly enough, about the exhaust note:
I met a guy recently who found me through some parts ads on CL. We live parallel lives in ways. His wife has an X5 (4.6is) and he owns an e39 wagon. We work and have homes in Seattle but also have small places out in the woods (5 minutes away from one another)

So, he texts/calls me up about this swap (I'd mentioned it in an ad) asking all sorts of questions and when I sent him this thread link, he saw my car and remembered something.

He told me how one day recently he and his wife were coming up on(unknown to him at the time) my wife in her X5 and me in my wagon following her, up a mountain pass in his '03 m-sport sedan. His wife asked after seeing my car, if there was an m5 e39 wagon. He said about the time he was explaining that they're weren't any made and mine was probably fake, they began to pass us in the far left lane. (he didn't know about the one in Munich, in the museum)

-Now I'll do the speed limit all day if left alone, except if I get the sense that someone wants to race and it looks safe. Going up a 4-5 lane mountain pass is one such "safe" place to me and it looked like he was making a move. (or the little kid in me wanted to play) I recalled this same day as he was telling me the story.-

He told me, (his words) "when you ripped past us, and we were doing about 80-85, the sound from your exhaust made her (let's just say excited). I guess the swap was successful."

So, long story short, I'm getting used to the additional power and the exhaust note after 3,600 rpm.

He just bought a 4.6is engine too. Seems like we might have started something here.

I think that if you want to keep the automatic, there's nothing better than the 4.6 swap for an e39.

He and I are slated for something he calls a "Texas carpool" Just drive your own car to and from the same place as the others in the "carpool" So from say Seattle to the cabin is about 86 miles. Should be fun.

He read this post and suggested that I add from him "I'm following from in front or leading from the rear." Read your post and laughed.

    I love the e39 community!

Not a really ground shaking update but something I've wanted to do since the 4.6 arrived:

So the engine sticker was pretty much hanging on by its last bit of glue when I first saw it and it came off at the lightest touch.

So I scanned it and played with the settings to get a better proof for the acid etching on a replacement stainless plate.

    The final proof:

Now, this will go off to a local shop and with luck, I'll have a new engine plate that stays with the engine for life. I won't have to worry about it falling off.

I'll get the plate in a day or two. Now the question of where to place it...

Thanks. It doesn't really serve a purpose but I'm sure it'll look good wherever it ends up.

I actually received 2 plates. I'll look tomorrow. They're too big for the vc's but each side of the acustic cover might work...?
