Alpina Z8 actually had an ultra rare M62TUB48 (4.8)
The Z8 featured the same 400PS (395hp) and 500 Nm (370 lb-ft) 4.9-liter V8 hooked up to a six-speed manual as the E39 M5, Alpina took a different path replacing it with the E39 540i-sourced V8 engine found in its B10 V8 S sedan. The V8 was bored to 4.8-liters producing a lower output of 381PS (376hp) but higher torque at 520Nm (383 lb-ft), while the only available transmission was the five-speed Steptronic automatic.
So glad I found this thread as I'm planning to do the same to my 540. You've answered all the questions I needed with the small differences between the engines that need to be taken from the 4.4 and put on the 4.6. I've found a 4.6 with 80k miles not far from me. Going to try and pick it up.
Heh heh I need a new deadpool thread for 4.6 swaps. That'd be a monster thread...

I might be on that list... Someday.

Good luck, we'll be here if you have questions but for the most part, "plug-n-play" you could be done in 8 hrs and driving even without a tune.

Last month I visited with M5Jed in California. Then he and his wife came up to Seattle. So cool, both of them. We set up a impromptu cars and coffee but I slept through my alarm and missed seeing Tim's M5 wagon he just finished. Still kicking myself over that.
I'd planned on putting these on right away but time/$ are going to keep them on the shelve until after New Years. This gives me the opportunity to piss off the wife by having them in the living room which I love.
This is going to be so much fun...
Keep in mind, I'm putting these on a 4.6is engine, in my wagon so there's going to be a slightly less aggressive turn on the secondaries than one would need on the X5. I'll have to find someone to fabricate an extension to fill the gap from the missing cats up front.
Still, the dyno, I know. It'll happen. I'm as anxious as you are to see the numbers.

Impressive. However this method will only work if you do a muffler delete. Which is what I plan to do because I'm 24 and I like noisy cars.

I think it could be done with mufflers.
It would require some pipe bending but here's a hint, the port side exhaust would exit the Starboard side of the rear of the car and it's muffler (symmetrically on the starbord side too) would be between the two exhaust tips.
Outside the box thinking is required.
You can definitely fit boxes but you would need to modify as Plattus1000 noted. If you did not lower the car you might not need to but then you would need to figure out the mounting. I checked countless threads and posts to figure out what I wanted and went muffler delete.

Speaking of boxes...
I will to the best of my ability, try to have a before and after dyno posted before February. Done @ DUDMD's shop so he can tune the engine. That and, it's Dima.
I'll still get another dyno before all that on this tune so that question gets answered.
Jed made these for the s62 but they'll fit the holes for all these blocks so we'll get an idea what gains can be had on a non s62.
If by chance you've got a spare m5 steering box, m5 sway bar or anything else I should mod while in there, I'd be forever grateful. These last few months wiped me out. I think we'll drop the engine so it'll all come out. Good time to look for leaks and whatnot on this girl's heart. Perhaps a good time to attach those engine badges I had made up.
In any case, I think it will be great to see what Dima can pull out of these on my 4.6 because on the 4.9 s62 Jed got impressive numbers. 26hp over Dinan M5 headers doing the math, thats over 50hp over stock.
I might need a muffler. Any way I can cut and weld 2 small ones together at an angle to replace the resonator? Butterfly cutout... Yes. I hope, it all costs $ I guess.
Happy New Year!

Lee - Those welds look sexy! If you were closer, I'd totally help you with those parts you mention (m5 steering box, m5 sway bar). Reach out to me anyway and we can probably work something out. I have the front end from that 2001 M5 I parted out.
