The locals ( me and one other) who just want ole plattus to continue on with his wagon, have started to harvest some parts. The parts car had to come 100 miles just to get the apron cut off (and go to the crusher while here). Could have been scrapped closer to it's home, but dropped off a pile of body parts also while here.
Getting together with the car, just to strip off bent parts and assess will be a 155 mile trip one way. Hopefully, we can get the car rolling again with some suspension parts. Then hang some sheetmetal to make it look like a car, so his free storage will be ok till spring.
Frame and apron repair will need funds not currently available, but as a testament to what kind of guy Lee is, we will do what we can to keep the project alive.

Yes, he whacked the pass windshield post too.
    And r fender, door.
Haven't seen it in person but no crush on the rail.
    Hoping for the best.
Donations accepted, the picture log will be worth it

I haven't earned any of this but, I'm grateful, humbled and thankful for the friendships I've had through this car. I'm without words.

And so it begins. The clean title rebuild of the 4.6 m-sport wagon.

Before the weather got bad, I made it over to central Washington with the trailer.
Weather got bad the next day, and soon, where it was will be in 2 feet of snow. Till March.

    Screenshot_20221102-023948_DuckDuckGo.jpg

Not that it will be inside at my place, because it's beyond full. But I can chip away at bits.
    Pictures of the car together.

(5 pictures per post and I got alot)

So it looks bad, and it is. But as you get all the bent crap removed, it really is only a drivers side rail/apron repair and a passenger windshield post repair.
Back when these were new, we put in full front rails, qtr panels, trunk floors to the wheel house. Carfax was just getting established back then. Imagine buying a clean title M5 to find out that it had major surgery in 01'. But this is a clean title, so no worries. Shows you that none of it matters.
Also, as I do car restorations, what's worse. Fixing a BMW with used factory parts, or rebuilding your rusty Camaro with cheap aftermarket qtrs and body panels?

Once some of the parts are off, you can see more. But notice that the hood is still basically aligned to the cowl.

Also peering under the car, the engine is still level to the body.

The major crush stopped at the strut tower, which has some serious damage. The tire that was ripped free pushed in the firewall a bit but not horrible.
The side apron shows that the damage stopped at the strut tower. With all that damage the drivers door is only hanging low a slight amount.

I will get pictures more after pressure washing and stripping underhood. And yes Lee, the front style 65's survived.

I admit, I'm not going at this super fast. I only have small blocks of time to devote to it.
I pulled the radiator, air ducts, ripped wiring, and power steering hoses off it today. Gave me a chance to pressure wash and really get a look under it. The radiator didn't have any signs of damage, shroud just had some cracks, but it was old and crumbly.
The cradle has to be pulled, and lately all the wrecked cars I've killed had pinched cradle bolts that had to be cut. The rail damage on this stops at the front mount, so that's good.
I really want to switch the oil filter housing and hoses so I can fire it up. If it has problems, it will come right out. If not, it will stay in as long as possible. (Storage problems)
The jedders (headers) are slightly in the way of getting to the steering column, that needs to be undone to drop the cradle. If I have to pull the header first, it will all come out. Headers need to come out anyway to fix the O2 bung position.

But I've established what I need to dissect off the used parts, so indoor work when it's raining.

Art they are, in so many ways..

I now own 2 4.6 engines. One doesn't run (see above) one does, well.

I am now the proud owner of an e53 I owned back in 2016-17.

    How do I even begin..

We (my ex and I bought this rig for her to enjoy and deal with driving Winter mountain passes. It cost about $8,500 then and we tossed about $9,700 at it to get it "right". The ex then thinks it's a money pit and wants to sell it, we did. It broke my heart. Like, sending an animal off to a new home or sadly, putting one down. The only redeeming factor was that Quan and his wife loved the X5 and I knew it was well taken care of.

Almost 7 years later and conveniently while my 4.6 e39 wagon is recovering in Wagon_ho's gracious care after I tried to install a fire hydrant into the engine bay of the wagon.. (long story, we'll agree that there was wildlife involved and just move on) 7 years later I get a text from someone I haven't communicated with for almost 5 years. It's Quan. He and his wife Chloe wanted to let me know that they had to sell the X5 and we're curious if I'd be interested. They have a pair of dogs and ine is dealing with some medical issues and for these reasons they bought a better suv for the dog's needs.

My heart was broken for their dog warmed by their efforts to comfort their friend and humbled at the offer to regain what I'd let slip once before. I didn't hesitate to agree to whatever price they asked and I paid it in cash. It took a few weeks to coordinate the purchase as we live on opposite sides of Washington.

The drive home felt like wearing your favorite sweatshirt or boots after losing either for a long time. I was, she was home. I'm sure we'll both regret it at some points down the line but for now, we're back together.

My plan is to add headers and basically do everything I did to my 4.6,installed in the wagon. All prepping for some forced air later or not, we'll see. I now have the ability to work with Jed to flow his pipes on a stock 4.6 and get effective numbers for the post install.

Past all the goodness, I'm once again reminded of why I enjoy the wagon forum so much.. Extended family. Love you guys.

For now, I'll say thank you to Quan and Chloe. The X is in good/fair hands and we'll adored. I'll be forever grateful for your gift of remembrance.

My favorite part is having 2, 4.6 engines to destroy, I mean play with.
If I buy parts for one, 90% of the time, I'll but 2. One for the next one to break.

The last owners put less than 10k miles on the clock. If I'm reading the odometer readings back when they bought it and when I bought it back, it looks like 7k miles since 2017.. It's been waiting for me.
