So if a 6 speed is going in, to run the 4.6is software would require a custom DME tune for the manual?

Do we know that the 4.6 converter is larger?
All I know is that it has a 400 rpm higher stall speed.
And the 4.4 converter might stall higher behind a 4.6 than the rating for a 4.4.
Normally a higher stalling converter is smaller, but we know it's not smaller, just different. 4.4 convertor is nominal 11".
I know someone who could check.

You'll have to ask Wagons_Ho, he's building what I want.
It'll be the last on a longer and longer list as time goes by.

In the beginning of this thread, where I'm talking about building a strong 4.6 to handle some forced air without strain, aboit that time, WH started thinking about how to make a blower that wouldn't destroy the engine.

As for the DME tune, possibly not but because BMW, yes most likely. The Alpina B10 or B8 could be mapped out and partitioned. I think DUDMD has these files.
Team that up with info we have from ess and other centrifugal chargers on say an m5's DME?

Still patiently waiting on Wagons ho's supercharger project, in the meantime i'm installing ms3x on mine, starting with fuel only

My guess, his life gets complicated as do all of us. I'll hold out patiently too. I have seen some of his work. He doesn't enjoy short-cuts from what I've witnessed.

    What pump/filter?

I still think the 4.6 TC will fit the 4.4. A friend of mine confirmed he had done this on a 4.4 x5...

    I think the 4.4 X5 had the same bell as the 4.6, just a smaller t/c. I don't think a 4.6 transmission will fit.
    Should be easy to confirm.

For E85 I'm using a Quantum 340lph and a m62 filter to an adjustable pressure regulator,

I do not think the trans will fit just the torque converter...

It can be made to fit with a grinder

Quick note: this thread, if nothing else (like many before it) speak volumes to the notion that just because it'll be tough or hasn't been done before, if you have the will... : )

I can confirm that the trans do have some swapability,
4.6 trans will fit into a 740i and the trans from the 740i will swap into the x5 , pulling the trans from my 4.6is right now and going to put it in the 7 , just swap the rear output shaft , as far as computers go , those are completely plug-and-play however, the 4.6IS , EGS is programmed to lock up the torque converter a lot more, I have 4.6IS EGS units in my e38 ,e39 and X5, witch will be getting a regular non sport trans, and I guarantee it will work fine but still lock up the converter a lot more. Not going to do a manual swap because I love my paddle shifters.

IMG_20190311_011829.jpgScreenshot_20190311-012451.jpgaccording to ZF the 4.4 X5 has its own bell different from the 4.6is and sporte38/e39. Use this link to find out what you can swap it's how I did it. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...=1552292947921

Has anyone noticed that the 4.6 uses a under-driven crank pully vs the stock 4.4 , this is more for making power than reducing rotating mass right?15529568350332589379092569982489.jpg

Huh! Interesting! Am I right in eyeballing that both belts are slightly under driven but the AC is just more under driven?

If you had one for free / cheap great but $600 for the .732 hp it represents is prob not really worth getting too excited about.

    Cool data fact though.

Was able to source a tub44 cylinder head, this head has a 5 cc smaller combustion chamber than the head on the TUb46, virtually the same except for combustion chamber size, the b46 also has higher quality valves and springs installed in it to handle its 10.5mm lift cam. After I transferred the valves, springs and cam over. I had it decked half a mil (.5mm). Did some calculations and it came out to a 12 to 1. Also check clearance for valves when in 20* advanve. And they cleared by (.4 mm) I would post some pics but I don't see any option maybe because I'm new, there are plenty in my profile however of its build

Have you calculated what is your dynamic compression ratio when vanos is advanced?

I also have a b46 block with b44tu heads. But the deck is lowered by just 0.1mm or less.
I had to do timing cams in the old school style. I used two dials. I couldn't use cams lock pieces because cams were more aggressive than b46 standard.

Sorry to shift gears but I've been silent a while, waiting for new things to add.

Yesterday DMI in Ballard WA (Dimitry) Let me have my car back after a few weeks without her. He'd spent the last few days (not weeks, sorry. I just parked the car) trying to ferret out a power loss I've had since the 4.6/4.4 tune.

While in there, he also took care of some other needed things:
Fuel filter, air filter, oil lines, brake lines, trans drain/fill-filter, new o2 sensors, air bags in the sls rear, plugs and a coil.

This next week, I'll visit the other Dimitry in Auburn WA at DUDMD.

With luck, he can pull my DME and re-write it or toss in another. For one reason or another, mine is sick. He can fix or replace it.

The last piece I need to secure for diagnostics would be the Mark IV nav computer to make my BUS system read ALL the codes it has... Germans.

If this all goes well, I'll try to put down some real numbers and post them.

I still am waiting on a part for Ghostbutts and some read-outs for m5Jed.

I am trying. Not on the Dead Pool thread yet GG!

    Once everyone else is happy, I will be doing this;

    Hi,

Why not a real LSD diff?

I just made a diff swap.
    Previously i have a 2.81 ratio 25% LSD and now there is a 3.38 40% LSD. It's fun now…

e39 540i/530d custom ratio Lsd Diff starting price was just over $1,500.
I think the LSD with stock 2.81 ratio would be cheaper.

My diff has new Timke bearings and 40%/15% locking and 4 friction shims and special assimetrical 30º Accel/60º Decel ramps. Also a custom 3.38 ratio. The total price and shipping costs were $1,980.

I don't know how much Wawetrack is. But this custom diff was plug and play. No machining, etc.

3.38 Diff in test and action:

A WaveTrac is $1299 through DiffsOnline and has a stellar reputation for performance and durability. Could not be happier with mine. No clunking or whining, just insane grip.

I have no clue what is is with vanos advance, I have been testing the engine out and can say that it is safe to run fuel as low as (87 AKI) (RON 91) with it's 12:1 static and 4.6 cams.
call me crazy for doing that but I can get away with it because I run a reduced coolant temp and Low intake air tempatures.
Have been watching how much timing the sensors pull and it's still safe at wot, no issues , I'm sure you will have no issue with a higher rating fuel.
These two compare 85AKI & 101 AKI. 91 Aki Was somewhere in the middle.
Matter of fact I recommend everyone reduce their coolant temp to 90c , better ignition advance, longer engie life and more stable oil temps, trade off is slightly more emissions, cats take care of most of it.

This is such a good thread with so much information and knowledge.

I've read it twice now, and its made me decide to build a m62b46 instead of a m62b44.

Looking forward to those dyno numbers.
