A few weeks ago I was driving the car and everything was fine, came to a stop at a light , took off went from second to third and it would not go in, also when shifting it feels like the shifter is twisted. shifts fine from 1st to 2nd , I'm pretty sure something happened to the shifter , anybody run into this before ?
oh it has the BavAuto short throw in it.
Thank you!

Sounds like one of the shifter console supports has failed or detached. You should have the sheet metal console.
Classic symptom of what alpinacsi has said. Youll want to refresh the linkage and bushings as well on the car as well at that point. Its all possible from underneath the car, but youre going to want it up on something a little higher than 3 ton stands to make it more comfortable to work. That is unless you have access to a lift! Most independent repair shops should also be able to remedy the issue with at most 2 hours of labor to replace all the linkage. Less than an hour to replace the bolts that are missing or loose.

My guess is the rubber mount/grommet at the rear of the shifter bracket. Like jbd said, might as well hit all the little grommets and bushings while you're there, it's a pain in the arse to get under and reach up to get to it. Could also be the mount itself backed away from the transmission and is maybe hanging by one side. The bolts on mine had backed themselves out pretty far and gave the bracket some slop.
Does you 85 have the sheetmetal shifter? If so it may be the two bushing that mount it to the transmission. I had a problem where shifting into 3rd gear was...crunchy. Got underneath and saw that one of the bolts had fallen out, guess I didn't tighten it enough when I did my clutch, might have forgotten to torque. idk. I'm not proud in any case.
Word of caution though, I haven't been able to drive mine since I replaced the bolt, so I don't actually know if it fixed the problem! But I'm willing to wager that was what was causing it.

I actually dropped off the car to get fixed as I didn't have the time and the weather is getting colder here in the northeast.
Ill find out what is going on with it this week. I'm sure something came loose or the bushings are all shot since it has been 12 years or so since it was replaced , I did order the uuc double shear selector rod that I will probably install this spring.

Make sure they send you the correct length DSSR. I believe it is a 148.
Mine was a 147 or something like that and was too short for my 260/6. I had to machine an adjustable thread to make it work.
Yes; 147mm. The 260/6 uses a completely different shifter support and selector.
good to know , I have to check what trans I have and measure the rod
