Now that's beautiful... I agree with the above, needs more abuse on camera
pics are broken I need more!
Well i just tried to see why the pictures aren't working and accidentally deleted a post because my phone is annoying. So if any moderator knows how to un-delete the post that would be appreciated! I'll try fix the pics soon and do an update tonight. Some of the engine is in the machine shop. .
Here are all the pictures that are missing in no particular order.. And then some new ones that make me sad
Uh-oh... An unfortunate series of events has ended in disaster. I'll explain in my next post along with a bit about the engine and what's inside it.
MLX Gasket
Big Studs
Still healthy
Hardly touched, its still good
Not so good...
Not great compression

I had the alternator fail which caused the belt to explode, which meant that the water pump wasn't spinning. On top of that I had lifted the head and pushed coolant out which I didn't realise so the temp on the gauge was reading air and not water so never seemed hot. The Issue with the head lifting/leaking compression under boost I have had before, and I believe I've found the cause. When I built the engine, I fitted large head studs. It wasn't known how tight to pull them down and after speaking with the machine shop and looking up specs for similar bolts I tightened them down to about 190Nm (140Ft/Lb). This is fine for the studs, However the head can't take it I've found after speaking with some people from the UAE. 150Nm is the max they can take before distorting apparently. So when it got hot and was over tightened etc, the head cracked through 2 of the bolt holes and into the water galleries. The head has been disassembled and the core will be going in the bin. 6 Inlet and 6 Exhaust valves are damaged too and will be replaced. I've already ordered new guides and valves, a new head gasket but just need to find either a new head or a good second hand one.
Cometic just released an MLX stopper type gasket for this engine and It arrived a few days ago. Don't worry people, It will be fixed and torturing tyres again in no time!
When I built the engine:
MAHLE Forged Pistons
PPM H-Beam rods
A1 Technologies H11 7/16 rod bolts
A1 Technologies H11 9/16 head studs
Double valve springs
Titanium Retainers
Supertech 1.5mm Oversize valves
Copper Beryllium valve seats
Bronze manganese valve guides
233Deg @ 50" and .430" lift cams
HKS Heat range 9 Spark plugs
ACL Race series bearings
Ross harmonic balancer with crank trigger wheel

Damn! Sorry to hear about this. Looks like you've already got another head already?
Just FYI - Imgur hates bimmerforums and blocks anything posted here. Your pics from Photobucket work fine though.
Yeah, can't see some of the pics nowadays Thanks to Imgur not liking a lot of forums.
Ok I've moved all the images to Photobucket because Imgur isn't being my friend. I can see the Imgur images on my computer but not on my phone. Nothing further to report about the car other than I bought a new oil filter.
Yep, all is good now.
you are out of control
Do you even fab?

Well I wish I could show a dyno sheet of my car making its 300whp or something like that but in reality I've left the thing in pieces in the garage for 2-3 weeks without wanting to look at it. I'd love to show the thing all finished and me being all happy with myself but it hasn't happened. However I've been driving to work everyday in my little daily driver and coming across many cars that i could have surprised with the e39 which had reignited my passion to finish this car. I've sourced a new core for the head ans have almost all the parts to complete it. I wanted to retrieve my valve seats because they are custom made and quite pricey. It did mean i would have to butcher the old head to get them so anyone one who wants to see inside a tb 48 head will be happy to see the next pictures. ..

Finally have all the bits to begin again on a new head. The core is at the shop being checked for hardness, cracks and straightness. I'll drop the rest of the bits off Friday arvo so hopefully in a week or so I can have it back and start reassembling it. I then have a few little jobs before I'll start tuning it. I retrieved all of my valve seats which i was happy about. Motivation is creeping back slowly
Here's the Crack that made me ever so sad
Retrieving the seats
Seats Retrieved!
All Parts ready for a new home
Look at the size of those studs!
Tomorrow I'll drop the cams off to the machine shop so they can make sure they're all good. Had one valve spring with lower pressure than the rest so considering that it got hot I've bought new Springs. The guides are installed apparently and the head should be finished early next week, which means it's time to pull my finger out and do all the jobs I should have done while it was sitting in pieces but didn't. I quickly knocked up a radiator tank thingy after work tonight but only tacked it together until I test it on the car. Hard to tell without the turbo and intake pipe properly mounted but it looks like it will clear everything. I'll finish welding it tomorrow. Really hoping things start moving again, I want to drive it!
New Springs
Yay progress!!
