I want to chine in here with my 2 cents. I have a Canadian spec '97 840CI and I did do Timm's DIY cross solder trick and it worked however with one huge side effect. I wasn't able to turn my car off any longer. It turns out that in the Canadian Spec cars run the shut off to the engine through those wires in that housing (wonderful German electronic engineering at work here). I had to disconnect the batteries in order to shut the engine off. Once I replaced the soldered bulbs with the normal ones again all was good (just back to poor lighting).
Cheers!
