DSC / 4x4 INACTIVE and TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROGRAM (JUMP BETWEEN SHIFTS)

    Hi..

Two weeks ago my 2006 X5 3.0i (77k miles) start blinking the 4x4 warning sign, and suddenly the TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROGRAM appears.
Strong leaps, jumps between shifts is drive me crazy. Even up and down, stronger when reducing from 3 to 2. All shifts are working.

My car had some codes pending, só I fixed them first imaging that would solve the problem.

Check the oil, filter and general condition of the gear box, and it's ok. After new battery, altenator ok, new spark plugs, new oil, new ignition coil, new ar mass sensor, nothing solve!!!
When I turn off the car, wait 1 minute, the 4x4 warning disappears, but keep the TRANS. FAIL SAFE PROGRAM. So I just run few meters and make a turn, I hear a noise under the car like a gear trying coupling, and at this moment the 4x4 Appear warning and the message appear: DSC / 4x4 INACTIVE.

What I found very strange was when I change the Ar mass sensor, and go out with the car to test... At this moment the problem appeared to be solved at all, no warnings, no error codes, no Trans. Failsafe Program, no 4x4 warning, and at least no leaps between shifts. Everything normal... But the happiness ends fast. After about 2 km running, all simtomas returned.

Could you please, someone, help me... or SAVE ME...

    Thanks a lot!
    Best regards

id look into a transfer case service when 4x4 comes on from my experience its usually means the transfer case needs serice or throing internal faults

The car went to the dealer here in Brazil and I payed to update all modules. The DSC / 4x4 was fixed, but the TRANS FAILSAFE PROGRAM back after 10 km.
As I just paid for the update, I'm back troubleshooting. Pay for a diagnostic here very very very expensive.

    At least, INPA/EDIABAS WORKING !!!

Now I'm able to read the DME and the EGS, Clear the error memory, reset the adaptations, etc. THANK YOU VERY MUCH DAVID!!!!

At beginning of the usage, when I cleared the errors and reset the adaptation, the jerk between shifts and TRANS FAILSAFE PROGRAM disappeared, and I thought FOREVER, shifts perfectly change, up and down very smoothly (very happy I were) but about 10 km, TRANS FAILSAFE PROGRAM back!!!

Studying the behavior of the errors in the DME and EGS I realized the follow:

    1) First of all, clear the memory of errors on both DME and EGS and reset all adaptations

    2) Start the engine and into1 km, two errors on DME pop up:
227 lambda contol tolerance Bank 1

228 lambda contol tolerance Bank 2

    3) After about 10 Km a new error pop up at DME:
    149 LM_HFM

    4) Immediately after the error 149 pop up at DME, 1 error pop up at EGS and the msg: TRANS FAILSAFE PROGRAM:
    146 CAN Moment interface

    5) The car start to jerk between shifts again.

I repeated those steps some times in order to be sure that the behavior is a standard.

As the first errors on DME is related to Lambda sensors and the response of the sensors were doubtful (frozen at 0.3 and 0.0 volts), I decided to change the lambda sensors before catalyst. Now the sensors are well been reading by INPA with good sensibility but the errors kept, and above behavior maintained. .

I'm more worry about the 149 ERROR at DME, that appear to be the source of the main problem.
As I could realize reading at forums, indeed was not a problem at the gear box. As I understood is related to the information that DME send to EGS, due that EGS throw TRANS FAILSAFE PROGRAM.

Any body know what 149 on DME means?

Did you ever figure out how to correct the issue? I am having a very similar issue on my 2006 X5 E53 with the same error codes.

Yes, I could solve that problem changing the ar mass sensor (MAF). Almost 2 years without problem, and the problem show up again.
I did the same, and bought another MAF, but keep the problem.

I'm using the Carly for BMW in my Android Galaxy Note 5, with the original cable from Carly in Germany.
    See the software report bellow.

    FaultReport_CarlyForBMW.pdf

I've aready search for any inteake leak using a smoke machine, and found one little leak. Fixed but the problem is still there.

Traking the parameters through Carly, I found out that lambda sensors (O2 sensors) are reading reach mix most of the time.

Following the parameters through Carly, I discovered that lambda sensors are reading "rich mixture" most of the time. So after I clean up the codes, the first error that pops up is: "Lambda contol tolerance too large bank", and after that, the others erros. So I' need to clean the fault codes every time that the Transmition or Engine enter in Safe Mode. It is not a good procedure, once I could getting worse the problem.

As soon as I have some time, I'll check out both of O2 sensors, knowing that I've already change both almost 2 years ago as well.

Is there anyone that have some suggestion?

    Best regards
    Marcio
