This is a neat writeup. I'm working on this project for "101 Projects for your BMW 3-Series",
Here's a diagram I made that helps explain this a bit further, as the wiring of the kits can be confusing...
H4 ? Are you sure not H1 or H7? Never heard of a H4 being in a BMW.

Like someone said earlier, definitely look into getting a custom wiring harness that powers the ballasts from the battery instead of through the stock wiring harness. Over time, the stock harness will fail because it cannot handle the ballasts power when they first ignite. You'll experience some electrical gremlins if the stock harness goes bad. An OEM harness is very $$$ to replace. Better safe than sorry.

I dont have a bimmer but plan on getting one shortyly, love the thread just wanna add that i have had an 8000k hid kit (h1 bulb) for roughly over a year and a half and have had no problems... i have included a link to my car its on sale now boys so pass it along... there is a photo of the hids 8000k > 6000k BRIGHTER IS BETTER! nice pics thoughand write up
8000k is bluer/purpler not brighter.Originally Posted by Lude2Euro
Ok, first off, lets start with the bulbs. The common mistake some people here is that all these high kelvin rated bulbs are the shizzle. Well, they couldn't be more wrong. The higher you go in kelvin, the less light and lumens you'll have. Pratically anything over 6k is really a waste if your at all concerned with your safety and brightness of lighting. So what is the best bulb out there then you ask? 4100-4300k. It has the most lumens out of all the HID bulbs produced. Thats why car manifacturers still use them today. Below is a graph showing you the variances of the light spectrum. As you can see, 4100k would be right where the "sweet spot" is on that chart. It produces near to the suns same kelvin thus giving you daylight-like output. Think of it like this, high kelvin bulbs would be like being out in the sun with sunglasses on vs a 4100k being in the sun w/o glasses on.
Nice. Did you have proper projectors for your HIDs? They look really blinding.Originally Posted by Lude2Euro

I'm not too sure but try it first without. If you're getting popped fuses, then yes.Originally Posted by FifthStreetz

BMW Parts Whore... BUY THEM PLEASE!!!
Hehe now that looks like some fun. But I barely use my highs, I will be putting HIDs in my fogs though
ill be using this in a few days
hi i'm nickmanderfield.com and i hang out on the internets,
i also recently started to sell carbon fiber coasters.
Yeah, no kidding. One of my ballasts went out on my bike so I ended up taking one ballast from my car's high beams since I RARELY use them (or even drive my car, for that matter) and putting it into my bike.Originally Posted by ///M LIFEŠ

Hi, I'm new here. I was wondering if an HID system drains your car battery faster if you have the engine off? I have HID lights with Angel eyes (not sure how to add a picture yet) Well, I didn't install them and the previous owner hadn't changed the 7 volt fuses which were both blown. I changed them to 15 volt and the lights came on, they look very nice. I left the new fuses in the box overnight with the engine off and the next day my battery was dead.
I'm not certain it was the HID lights, but they look quite power hungry.
I'm not sure how an HID system would drain your battery if the engine was off. Unless the lights were actually on. I highly doubt the HIDs would drain the battery since they don't draw any power when off.Originally Posted by p.a.r.t.y
Power hungry? Your halogens require more power than HIDs.
