I had every intention of driving my car more than I did. However when I first got it I spent so much time addressing all the little things that bugged me that it didn't spend much time outside the garage. As the months and years passed I observed the values continue to rise, especially on the manual gearbox cars. Truth be told it was always a nagging dilemma of mine ... keep the miles low to preserve value or drive it and enjoy it. The strange thing is I get just as much (if not more) enjoyment wrenching on cars than I do driving them. Strange, I agree. The individual who bought my car has an immaculate garage full of low mileage original cars of all marques, including a 16K-mile E24 M6 which he wants to park my former car next to. Cars mean different things to different people. That's the beauty of the hobby . . . there's room for everyone.

Any idea why the seller in the Hemmings ad for the $279,000 Arctic Silver '95 CSi is being so secretive about the chassis number?

Privacy and location reasons. It’s a legitimate person and ad. I know him VERY WELL. A friend of mine. Car is real and so is he. Serious buyers will ask for that info via emails.

Thanks much Alec - I have no doubts the car is real, it just seems odd for such a prestigious offering that you wouldn't provide that information. I think I figured out the chassis number regardless as it's not terribly hard to piece together the available info on a whopping 225 cars (17 in Arctic Silver).

Wow, just $279k for a 30k mile CSi. I was about to write the check but then I noticed it only had one key as well as cosmoline in the engine bay. So . . .

Speaking of higher-mileage 850CSi's - this UK based dealer has no less than four (4) CSi's in their inventory, including a Barbadosgrun Euro LHD example which has covered 255k miles.
    http://www.signaturemotorcompany.co.uk/
They're currently asking from $USD60 - 65k each for these cars, with mileages ranging from 119k to 255k miles.
I like the Bordeaux Red car (but not the aftermarket wheels).
Interior of the Barbados car is certainly in keeping with its high mileage.

Have heard on the E31 grapevine overnight that the UK-based 'Signature Motor Company' (above) are known for posting illegitimate sales, hijacking listings for cars whose owners already have them advertised for sale elsewhere.
The Barbados green CSi above is a case in point...the owner is selling the car for EUR38k, and these guys have it listed for £GPB44k without the car in their possession, or the owner's consent!
And by the way, the car's mileage is 255k kms, not miles as given in the 'bogus' Signature ad.
    Caveat emptor, as they say.

Wow, now that's an interesting business model, bolstering your inventory by ghosting private sales ads. Would be fun to commit to buying the Barbados CSi but only offering €38k....when the dealer refuses, just say you'll go ahead and buy it from the actual owner lol

Since Bring a Trailer was brought up a few posts back, perhaps Alec Cartio could share with us his personal experience with listing (and selling) his CSi on BaT. I've already expressed my views, but I think it would be useful to get another data point (I'll give you time to catch your breath Alec).

I think just about every regular forum member on here was glued to his auction, so we all got to see some of the pros and cons of BaT play out. In the end I think the results were very encouraging.

Just for a point of reference, as of this writing Alec's CSi auction listing garnered 36,006 views and 1,054 watchers in just 1 week. That's pretty amazing. It would be great if we could break the # of views down a bit more to determine how many unique individuals visited his listing. I wonder how that stacks up against eBay, AutoTrader, Hemmings, etc?

Compare that to the 37K 850i 6-speed I sold on BaT last month. My final tally was 14,561 views and 735 watchers . . . respectable but nowhere near Alec's. I think more and more collectors are realizing BaT is a great place to find special cars.

And the bordeaux red..... not a CSI (look at switches around the shifter) or one with serious issues. They tried the same hijacking trick with my CSI.....(asking pictures, etc ....).

I was thinking of making myself a t-shirt:

Of course you could make one for air cooled Porsches, Ferrari Dino's, or any other cars that are on a rocket trajectory in value!

Just in time. My insurance company is writing off my M73 for a minor hit by an 40 tonne cement truck. They think it's an $6k USD car. BAT says otherwise.
