Hey guys quick question here...
Does the rack have 2 or 1 guide bushing? Real Oem says it needs 2 and 4 o-rings but the only bushing I can see is on the passenger side, I just took apart the left side and there is nothing there, also the bushing won't fit on this site quite well.
So bottom line:
-Does it have a bushing on each side of the rack?
-Does it have 2 bushings on the right side?
-or-
-Does it have only one on the right side?
I've used the search function and asked around as well and no one gives me a definitive answer.
Thanks in advance.
PS: It's a non-power steering unit.

Just rebuilt mine. It had 1 bushing and 2 o-rings.

Not sure where you put the second one... The whole pinion gear/adjusting piston assembly is kinda in the way on the driver side, not to mention it makes it redundant (if the bushing centers the rack then what does the piston do?).
Unless you were referring to the poly outer bushings in your picture. I believe OP meant the single bushing that is inside the housing on the passenger side.

most don't, unless they added.
all model years have the mount for the steering damper on the rack body, but not the one attached to the end of the rack, although it can be added.

Right! Mine has the damper and yeah I'm talking about the guide bush inside the rack. Wonder why the ETK says 2 are needed.

dubs, yours is a 77, they came stock with the dampener, one of the several details that make the 77 standout.

Nice. I still need to fiddle around in there. Would be nice if I could spend the same money my old lady just put into her Volvo.
I think I'm just going to have to start "breaking" things on it.
I know there is 2 locking taps on this bushing, but my old one crumbled to pieces and is already out.
Is there any chance that rack bushing can be installed with the rack still assembled and in the car? Like if I turn the wheel all the way right , the center shaft retracts slightly in. Is there any hope I'll get that bushing into place before tabs break off?
nope, you have to disassemble the rack.

Definitely disassemble the rack. It's a bit of a pain in the as. I just did it and I couldn't tell you exactly how. There are tabs that are unused when installed but can be used to compress the upper and lower pieces of the rack but I found it was difficult to slide the subframe (those tabs are at the back of the rack and it slides in at the front, so the front is a bit uncompressed and difficult to slide in). I think the best option is to get the whole rack out. Install the bushings, compress it, zip tie it, slide it in to the subframe, bolt it in, and then cut the zip ties and yank em out.
I think I had to give it a few love taps to slide in and it was tough to get the holes to line up to get the rack in to the subframe.
I also removed the end links and installed new ones. They were seized so they had to go anyway.
Good luck.
