Rattle on start-up

I have a 2000 M5.


When left overnight, it starts fine in the morning, no nasty noises at all. When it's warmed up, been run or driven, starts again fine straight away, or 5 mins after.


If left for an hour, or even 5 hours, it rattles for 3 or 4 seconds, then sounds ok again. Sometimes the noise is worse than other times.


Any ideas?

Sounds like typical E39 M5 VANOS rattle. Do you have a pre-lci model? What mileage are you at? You can replace the chain tensioner as preventative maintenance, that usually helps with the 'rattle'. Sounds like you have a 2000 model or prior, those models didn't come with the oil accumulator like the 01+ models.

Mine does the same thing, and I have a 2000 (09/1999 build). I do plan on replacing the chain tensioner soon.

All models before 2001. So basically 2000 models if you're in the US.
