Used a soldering iron and surplus material of the same make up to repair this part:

    For vehicles with
    M Aerodynamics package
    S715A=Yes
    09 Engine compartment screening, front 1 51712695680 $172.85

Was minimal damage to the back, and one eyelet broken. Turned out well.

Bought a 20" aluminum pizza pan from Amazon for $15 to make an electric fan mount, fit very well, also bought 2 pieces aluminum strips from Home Depot as mounting brackets, also got some 1/4 bolts, nuts and washers, cut the 16" hole, attached it to stock plastic fan shroud, pretty neat application.

Saturday: M-Tech front and rear bumpers on the wagon. Front is Replica, rear is OEM. Took the pre-facelift headlights off to fix the adjusters, add US-spec 2000 M5 lenses. Put a spare set of Facelift Hellas on in the meantime (no halos though, because Touring )

Today: - US Filler panel on tailgate delete.

    Pried off the grommets
    Took off the filler plastic
Cleaned up the gunk with a combination of Simple Green, Bug & Tar Remover and Elbow Grease
Reinstalled grommets directly into tailgate body
Added a bit of foam cushioning to this generic plate bracket from Amazon
    Reattached plate

I miss my black frame though. The old metal one was too warped and worn. Might find a similar plastic one. I don't like naked plates.

You should keep the facelift lights, they look way better than the pre-facelift lights IMO. And you can make the angel eyes work with a bit of wiring— I made the angel eyes on my 540it work by running them to a switched source of power. Now they're always on as running lights, which is perfect since I have my DRL's disabled.

Finished my 5 Speed swap on the wago friday of last week. Smogged and registered today + first bath in 2 months. Glad to be driving it again. Bought those cheapo Cup Holders that snap in by the AC controls (for $8.69 why did i not do this sooner!).

Car is running great since the swap, plan on changing oil soon and then just driving it.

Looking good in the neighborhood Setho.
I’ve had good experiences with TRW. Keep up the good work. I think you be part of the M62 shoot out along with Thad, Philly, Juicy Jim, GG, and 540 M.
That would be epic for us M62ers.

Attempted to start her up for the first time in a while. She gave me some grief, but finally got her started after pulling the fuel pump and applying direct power to it. Reinstalled and she started right up.

Than proceeded to drive her to the shop where i replaced the power steering pump with a TRW remanufactured unit. Steering does feel better.

But wait, than i noticed sone cracking on my SC belt, so i referred to GG's amazing thread on parts, and am hoping the greenstripe belt lasts a bit longer.

Over the weekend, took the 528i for a 1500 mile trip cross country. All-in-all, very uneventful. MPG stayed between 26.3 and 27.0 thru out the trip. Not too shabby for 340k on the clock!

One question for the masses: Somewhere around Wyoming, throttle response deteriorated. Seemed like I needed to apply more throttle than I was used to to get up to speed on onramps, etc. Once at speed, cruise control appeared to have no issues maintaining speed. Econometer looked normal as well. Two thoughts come to mind: altitude and fuel quality. The problems seemed to start at / around 6000' elevation. I'm currently at 5300' and have the same issue. As far as fuel quality goes, I will typically fill with Mid-grade (89) fuel. I noticed that mid-grade in Wyoming / Nevada was listed as 87 octane. (Which I believe is listed in the manual as the lowest acceptable grade.) My next tank will be 91 to see if that makes a difference. Any thoughts? Reset the fuel trims with INPA?

    Thanks!

    James

In the past 2 months: new front MTech bumper with Hamann lower lip, blacked out grills, replaced rear bank clogged Magnaflow cat-converter, new OEM US Spec xenon headlights, yellow fog light bulbs, trunk struts, new ambient ext. temperature sensor, and replace BMW logos with blacked vinyl ones (wheels, steering wheel, front hood and rear trunk emblems). Next up, maybe replace driver side front fender and rear left side window regulator.

    OEM M5 F Bumper | EuroDyne R Bumper | Magnaflow Exhaust Manifold and Full Cat-Back Exhaust | Koni+H&R Sport | CDV Deleted | Eibach f/r sway bars
    Hard-wired V1 Radar | E60 shifter w/ZHP shift knob | 18x9 Style 42 | Bridgestone RE970AS 255/35 | Zimmermann XDrilled F/R w/Akebono Euro Pads
    35% Madico tint | Infinity Basslink | E0n0n D5124Z Navi | Thule Bike Rack

Those look nice and I like the caps a lot but I personally don't like any branding on my plate frames. Unless someone pays me monthly to advertise lol.

But on a more specific note, I need a frame with a deeper lower bezel that hides the "Empire State" portion of my plates. I always feel that the state motto is too busy on any plate.

I also took my 528i on a cross country trip, about 3000 miles roundtrip to Colorado. I noticed the same thing, diminished throttle response at higher altitude. I reset my adaptations with INPA and it seemed to make a minimal, but slightly noticeable difference. I run a minimum of 91 octane. I mostly just think it's air density. I also drove my car up Pikes Peak to 12,000 feet to watch the Pikes Peak Hillclimb, and it was very noticeably anemic at higher and higher altitudes. Most cars in the hillclimb are forced induction or electric for this very reason.

I'd be curious about other people's experiences at high altitudes.

Last year I flew to Colorado with a friend to buy a 2002 540it with him. We definitely noticed some sluggishness when going through the mountains at 10,000+ feet, even with 91 octane. As soon as we got to Phoenix, it picked up a lot of power at the lower altitude.

Looks good! I'd lower it to get rid of some of that crazy wheel gap in the front and would add a rear M-Sport bumper, but that's just my opinion haha

I’ve noticed that as well, when I go to Corpus Christi, which is sea level with 93 octane. Man that 540 really shines and with the Autoworks Tune and the clone Dinan intake what a difference.

I loved the rich smell when I get it going triple digits with my foot buried to the floor. My wife tells me it smells like when your getting a perm LOL

Definitely normal. High altitudes can cause 20%+ power loss. Los Angeles’ local Angeles Crest Highway climbs to 8,000 feet, but something about the 5-6k foot mark really makes the power drop off.
