Just drained oil, replaced vanos solenoid gaskets on both banks. I also have oil filter hose o-rings that seal the oil hoses to the block, it is leaking pretty bad over there, I cannot see where is leaking but I am pretty sure it is where the oil hoses go into the block. according to JimLev, I need to remove engine mount and bracket to gain access. Since my car has coolant cooled alternator and alternator hosing is part of lower timing cover, I cannot remove the alternator to gain access. Anyone has successfully replace the oil hose o-rings? I looked there, I might have to remove the PS hose too to gain more room, not excited about doing this job.
Walkinator, the 2 lines go into the engine mount use o-rings for the seal at the mount. The other side of the engine mount has another set of o-rings to seal the oil path thru the engine mount and into the block.
Sound like a dumb piece of engineering to have the oil flow thru the mount and into the block.
Yes, I didn't realize that there are also 2 o-rings between the block and bracket until I went to realoem and looked at the bracket diagram. I also found a picture that shows the bracket on the engine, now I understand how the oil path flow through the bracket, it is a dumb design, anyway, I need to buy the 2 o-rings that go between the block and bracket, someone mentioned that GM LS oil pump o-ring fits, do you know what is the OD of the o-ring?

I've had a couple of recurring codes for a while now. Finally did something about them.
* P0100 MAF - Bought new Bosch unit from Amazon. Was identical to old one. Reset code.
* P1475 LDP - Replaced charcoal canister / leak detection pump unit (16131183573). Reset code.
So far so good!
Swapped out the 3 lengths of cable for the bonnet release mechanism. Easy seeing as I already have most of the front of the car off. Huge difference over the old rusting dry ones. I'm back to zero resistance and smooth bonnet opening experience. : ]
Went back into the dash. Last weekends journey ended when I was able to test the blower fan, and it seemed fine. 2 days later (& 100 degree heat) it ceased running, again. Changed FSU with no change. Voltmeter says all is well upto the blower, so new blower it is.
Also showed me that if I ever get really bored, there's a tube frame that needs a little paint...

Small blower motor replacement tip - don't lightly drop the new blower motor and non-visibly damage the cage so that it looks 100% fine and even then works for about a month or so after reassembly but then shatters at speed and throws a blade and you have to do it all over again. Sure wish somebody had warned me about that. :P

Nav went on the fritz... was driving to the lake and the nav started opening and closing non-stop over and over until I found somewhere to pull over and turn everything off. Waited a few minutes after finally being able to get the cassette out (my form of aux) and it finally chilled out. Decided to not touch the aux and just listened to the radio.
Seriously time for a new car.

Sounds like it wasn't happy about the aux-in adapter cassette... You should look into either setting up the OEM aux-in with a BM53 radio or an aftermarket solution like GROM or Dynavin. I hated using cassette adapters in my 540it, the sound quality was pure trash. I got a Dynavin N6 and never looked back.

Looks like once you get the dash off it's pretty easy to access stuff like AC components. How'd you find pulling the dash off?
Yeah that's what I figured. On my previous E39 the pull on the hood release handle was nice and smooth.
When I got this 525i it was pretty obvious the cables were stuffed when the handle had a lot more resistance and an almost snap action half way through the pull as it popped the front latch.
The handle that pops out the front of the grill was very stiff too. Used my favourite lubricant on that.

Pulling the dash board is easy as hell.
Set the controls for the heart of the sun
Pulling the dash wasn't too bad, especially now that I've done it twice. I went to NewTIS and printed off the procedure, as well as all of the prerequisite items. Followed step-by-step, it's fairly simple.
A couple of suggestions:
Move steering wheel out and down prior to disconnecting the battery. (Saves the oh duh moment...)
Pay attention to where your wiring passes thru for the instrument cluster trim. It can go several ways.
I found that I prefer to remove the glove box completely after disconnecting the strap & piston. (Feels like it provides additional room when working with the trim pieces under the passenger side.) If you do, remember to disconnect / reconnect the flashlight wiring.
All in all, took about 2 hours to take it apart, 15 minutes to change the fan, and 2 hours to re-assemble.

Yay
ill second that. First time was less bad than advertised, second time was really routine. ...
Wut? Disconnect the battery? You bin readin too many of them tightass factory procedures.
(I know that sounds sarcastic but srsly. Not really necessary. )
Totally. Part of being an old-head is learning how “take MORE stuff off early rather than trying to screw around and work around it” is 8/10 times the way to go, FASTER, and easier.
Nice. That’s good time, I think maybe I can make a round trip in 3hrs if my life depended on it... but then again that was after I did it 2x back to back, maybe I’m rusty now....

Disconnect the battery. .. Only when playing with electrically activated explosive devices. Lol

Installed my slushbox back into the wagon for the third time in 3 months this past weekend. I rebuilt it, it leaked, I took it out and replaced the seal, it leaked again much worse...The third time I was informed by a seasoned transmission specialist that you are supposed to "coach" the torque converter bolts in when connecting it to the flex plate/flywheel. If you just torque the bolts down one at a time it gets in a bind and doesn't spin true. My wagon is finally back on the road and leak free!! Also slapped in a new steering rack because it blew the seals out on both sides at 108k miles.
In the process of all of this I now have two broken downstream O2 senors, thanks to the air hammer used by the exhaust shop that removed my old broken studs. Thus I have SES lights on for that.
Transmission light is on after this last install, but it drives okay, maybe a slight hard shift from 1st to 2nd. Thats when the light came on. Gonna try a scan and clear to see what happens.
My steering wheel is a little off because I forgot to mark the steering column/steering rack splines before reinstall
Sold the first half of my Black and Blue m5 interior last night. Owner has everything but the front seats until he gets the rest of the money. Guess now is a good time to swap my 540i's BAV Sound speakers into the new-to-me 530i

OMG that sounds like a nightmare. This was my least favorite job on the E39. My personal horror story after installing new blower: I tried plugging the climate control unit back in to test operation and plugged to the radio harness instead. They looked the same in the rats nest of loose cable with the dash out. Anyway, I spent a half hour cursing, another half hour trying to curse at Amazon for selling me a bogus part and then a half hour giggling when I had discovered my error. 😂
Rolled over 210k miles in the 540it today... have been doing burnouts to celebrate.
