Dropped $380 on meyle HD thrust arms, some meyle lower control arms, and a ball joint splitter tool from fcp euro.
Of course only afterwards did i look more into front end shimmy problems on the 540i and surprise surprise, there can be tons of causes so the $380 i just spent isn't really guaranteed to solve it.
    hooray
Looking for an e39 Touring black carpet set, including the rear cargo cubbies and side sections!
ALSO looking for 540i 6speed manual transmission sets (2001+ pedals with switches, driveshaft, gearbox), for the 6speed swap! Probably not for a while....

I crossed the not at all important and yet totally shareable moment of (mostly) all the same odometer digits. I dropped the ball and missed the trip odometer synchronization but I'll do my best to get it right when they're all 3's

In most cases the control arms are the cause, so there's a good chance that'll solve your front end issues.

Dropped mine off at the shop. Got simultaneous engine and transmission failsafes due to blown F1 fuse in ebox.
From what ive gathered, might be a short somewhere with the thermostat.
Unfortunately i dont have the time to diagnose lately..so ill have to pay

Just FYI my 530i had the infamous shimmy while braking and I assumed it was the upper control (thrust) arms too due to past experience. The car happened to need a four wheel brake job, which I just did with front and rear pads and rotors. Well it brakes beautifully now with no more shimmy or vibration - so the front brake rotors were definitely warped or had uneven wear. Something to consider.

this is inconsistent shimmy while at speed or braking, so i doubt it's rotors/pads.
it'll shimmy on some roads between 45 and 60 then be totally fine on others at those same speeds, quite annoying

Sounds like control arms to me, but it's worth checking your tire balance, wear, and alignment too. I found on the old Sumitomo HTR Z3s I was running a while back that I would get steering wheel shimmy when the tires had 20-30% tread life remaining.

    The hits just keep coming.
i'm pretty sure i have a sticking driver side front caliper. Put my car in the air to to the thrust arms and noticed the driver side wheel was way hotter than the passenger side, and was much more dusty, also the wheel was locked enough that i could undo the lug nuts without holding the brake pedal. uh oh.

    here's the passenger side wheel

and here's the driver side, note way more brake dust

    IMG_20180418_212939.jpg

not sure if this is contributing to my front end shimmy though, since i have detected absolutely no "pulling" to the left while driving at any speed

    Definitely sounds stuck!

You could try giving it a good bleed, rebuild the caliper, or throw a known working one.

Could be. These cars really don't do all that well in the rust belt as they age.

I picked up the rear touring seat from the upholstery shop. He did a great job with it. Three coats of satin black.
He did all of the back seat including headrests. Pic of just the bench seat.

Washed & waxed Frankenbimmer on Sunday...including the black, factory primered, made in Taiwan hood.
He looks a hundred times better now.
I was going to wait until I get the car painted before getting new grilles...but the black hood is growing on me.

Should I just slap some chrome grilles on with the black hood & call it good?
Or, should I just wait, without kidneys, until it's all painted? Thoughts?

hmm, did this used to be a grey seat?
how much did it cost to get recolored?
i'm considering getting all my touring carpet dyed black since it's impossible to find black touring carpet nearby

Not recolored, is the black one out of my alpine white touring. The plan is to use the black carpet and cargo area pieces out of my alpine white car.
I have e38 front seats and M5 extended leather dash, door cards and console. I spent $400. to have the whole seat done, the bench part was beat to hell. I should of taken a before picture. Would have been $200. in dye and supplies to do what I wanted so I just wrote the check.
The M5 leather has all been dyed and touched up by Clemster it looks brand new. I also have all new black headliner for it also.

and new rear cargo trim, and new speakers, and a new Dynavin N7 and new antenna and,and n and

The kidneys are hard to remove and somewhat brittle - even when new. I'd wait until it's painted.

replaced the alternator tensioner assembly, the whole thing cuz might as well

also got under the car to replace the control arms, i spent about an hour trying to pry the lower control arm ball joint post out before giving up, it's currently dripping in pb blaster.
anyone know a really good ball joint seperator that fits this? The one from FCP euro is really underwhelming and basically doesn't work. jaw doesnt open wide enough to do the lower control arm ball joint and its too bulky to get to the thrust arm ball joint
    https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bal...cta-tools-4013

also think i'll need to drop the sway bar a little bit to get to the bolt head holding the thrust arm to the car

edit: might be able to do the lower control arm with this method....i think my largest c clamp is big enough...

Plan had fullly been for me to do it myself but guys cut me a decent deal and my bud convinced me that its a truly sucky job on the ground, and, that since my starter "looked like it'd been sitting on the bottom of the ocean for a few years" the chances of rounding off the fasteners trying to bust things loose with weird wrench angles from being on the ground was high. Definitely driving around with more confidence now with that in there and car has been running MINT so thats all fun.

And because car was going to the shop, that also shamed me into a full interior spring cleaning 3 days ago... must have been 10lbs of beach sand and dog dirt / fur in the winter mats and dog-cover I had in the back. Truly embarrassing for a while there, but now everything is nice and tidy and there's no longer a blinding blizzard of loose dog fur when you open the sunroof at highway speeds.
In regards to the starter issue you were having. How would you describe what would happen the times it would stick?

Last summer every once and a while I would get a terrible gravelly metallic noise upon startup but never found any lead on what it could be.

Over the winter I did a M54 intake swap and replaced the starter while I was in there thinking it might be my noise source.

    Was I correct?
