So amidst the chaos of what I call life right now, a few days ago I got a call about the car. Excellent, finally, I'm thinking.
The brand new alternator I put in is no longer charging the battery. Mechanic says battery wasn't holding charge, but no lights until about the 5th day, it was the red light. I drove the car roughly 10 miles (closer to 7) since the new alt, including to the shop. The cat isn't on yet, the tensioner isn't on yet, the exhaust isn't fitted with pipe from when I hastily chopped off the scuba tank.
I'm so ready for good news.
I've been dremmel polishing everything I can get my hands on thats metal. I need a hobby. To make this official, I purchased headlight restore kit and fiberglass to attempt bumper repair.

Update on the heater core saga, turns out the part number I ordered wasn't what I actually received, box was right. Item was not.
Car is in a million pieces and I'm waiting on a new core now 2-4weeks.

Also drained and removed the filter from the automatic transmission. The gasket is STUCK to the body of the transmission, and the filter o-ring is stuck in the bore. Fluid was dark and thin after 146k miles and 15 years, but not much metal shavings on the magnets, and it didn't seem to be burnt. I have zero experience with other automatic transmission fluids, so hopefully everything will go back together nicely and run smoothly.
Stripped the drain bolt; fill bolt was easy to remove. 7mm Allen/Hex hammered in easily and did the job just fine. Didn't strip one of the 22 pan bolts, go figure.

Contemplated it.The 528i sprung a coolant leak at the lower RHS (passenger) corner - if I read it correctly with my blind hand. Left my wife and mother-in-law stranded. Decisions, decisions.

I have used these with great success.
I have to remove broken fasteners all the time on marine machinery and equipment, so the nastiest rustiest brokest thing on a car matches what I work with.
I hate easy outs, I break those more than they are ever successful.
Are those little Allen head retaining screws truly necessary? I just tend to replace them every time as I'm not in the mood to deal with stripping them.

My crank case vent valve finally came in and I got it in the car! It no longer sounds like I'm being abducted by aliens half of the time. Unfortunately I can't smokescreen potential threats behind me anymore.
I also picked up some touch-up paint that I need to throw on a couple of places. And a couple of bolts that hold the cover over the coil packs were missing, as well as two of the snap on covers that cover the bolts. So I threw those in and she's looking and running good! Definitely was pretty good day.

Blew apart my waterpump, overheated, low compression in cylinder 4 &5......I think it's time to find a new car
Crawled under the 540 to see why my exhaust is rattling again. The fan rubber spacer is torn again. Looks like I need to realign my exhaust when I replace it this time

I would replace the head gasket at least, like DustenA suggested. You may not be out of the game yet. I would really hate to see it leave us.
Today, I was lucky to only slightly overheat after my water pump cracked in the middle of travel. Local shop quoted $780 for parts and labor - I gladly turned them away. Finally got my car towed back home at no charge, thanks to unbelievably terrible assistance from AAA. Parts are coming in the mail for $110 and labor + beer is on me.. what better way to bond with my car for an afternoon?
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
Test fit, Super happy with the fitment. Got it from Euro Division in Australia. Don't mind the painters tape on the edges did it in-case fitment sucked & had to return it.
So this, With my new facelift Morimoto D2S RHD 4.0 build with 127mm switchbank angels etc.
I'm keen!
Cheers

What, are elves making it, only at midnight, out of unobtainium & unicorn horn... and then shipping by pony express?
