Just finished swapping out the T-Stat that I heated the spring on. It worked fine in the summer but now that it's getting colder when I'm on the highway cruising the temp only gets to ~85°C.
I put in an OE one and will power the heater with a custom circuit to control the temp. That won't be done for a few weeks.
Got my set of new m parallel 66 style wheels that are in way better shape than mine especially considered one of my rear wheels is cracked around the inside rim they look great though my best looking 66 is far more scuffed up then the worst one of these which has a tiny little notch in it... I ordered new tires this morning I got a pair for the rear wheels (Continental ExtremeContact DW) I got a call this afternoon saying they were in and waiting for me going to go have them put on along with these wheels in the morning finally the one missing link to the d5... Everything else is rock solid

This is what the wheel looked like that is cracked

That's a mean pothole.
FWIW - M-parallels are Style 37's.
I don't see the crack.

there are several styles of parallel spoke wheels the 66s are one of them those are another type... They are still known as parallel M 66... The 18 inch wheels that you are referring to are the parallel M 37's... I just put that picture up to show the condition of the wheel that was being replaced not the crack I don't have a picture of the crack but it's about an inch long hair size crack right in the middle of an indentation on the inner side of the wheel rim on the weak side... I have an appointment at 9:30 to have my new set put on along with some new tires pretty pumped... I'll post a picture of the damage once the work is done I will have easier access to that angle of that wheel... You rural country guys are lucky you don't have to deal with the ridiculous week and underfunded infrastructure of the inner-city you can tell it was damage that occurred coincidentally on the same spot probably overtime from several different potholes because there was no one particular pothole that was extra heavy or anything like that I just walked out to my car and noticed it had 6 1/2 PSI yelled out a few cuss words pulled the wheel off sprayed some soapy solution on after compressing it and yelled out a whole lot more cuss words very dissed tasteful in my driveway as I discovered my wheels were not able to hold a damn tire with air. ?? I got the set of four for $850 with the tires on them they have Michelin pilot sport tires on the rear wheels which will make for good spares I will have so many spare tires after this work tomorrow morning... And I've been told they cons be repaired but I saw a good deal for a set of factory non replica wheels and jumped on it... At this rate the others probly aren't far behind... It was definitely a matter of coincidence and being hit hard at the same spot over and over again on the weak side of the wheels rim

Just for fun, give me a range of $ that you got the project for? What needs doing?
- - - Updated - - -
This 2-week-old project with 300K miles has a whole barn of wants/needs, so it's prioritizing cost vs. use to me.
Intended use is as a toad behind a motor home, so not a lot of driving miles, but it will look good behind our coach....but I want it to run when I want it to.
Today I painted/clearcoated the fourth wheel; rubbing compounded/polishing compounded/waxed the rear deck lid and bumper cover; checked about 30 fuses to make sure they are clean; and put a charger on the battery to get to to a perfect charge for our test drive tomorrow.

Tracked it for the first time. Will get some video soon. Wasn't too bad except for the all season tires, stock brakes, open differential, and the fact that the car weighs a crap ton. I did tail a viper the whole time. The guy seemed like he had too much power for his own good. I also got the TRANS FAILSAFE PROG cause my auto slushboxx overheated cause I was manually shifting between 2nd and 3rd. If I kept it in sport kickdown would initiate and cause me to loose traction from the sudden surge of power lmao.
Total loss and broken stuff: Ate my brakes, ate my tires, sprung a vacuum leak that triggered a cel, and broke one of my center muffler hangers causing a horrendous rattle. Was awesome though. Many people seemed surprised to see a 16 year old in an E39 romping around actually keeping up.

New master cylinder acquired. Pedal assembly built. Wiring and hydraulics tomorrow and she'll be ready for her maiden voyage to the shop for programming.
From many to one.

3 pedals!
Manuel wants to wrestle however.. Spent an hour and a half trying to get it jacked into place, currently about an inch from being mounted and I can't get leverage to push it forward.. Going to have to get out the persuader tomorrow.
Love installing manuals by myself..

I'd do another one. Hardest part is figuring out all the gotchas the first time through. Couple things are helpful to have two people for but this should be no more than a weekend job with all the parts together.

Got my new in 66s put on with my Continental ExtremeContact DW(s) still running Eagle GT's in the front they're all very decent but these ExtremeContact DW are levels above the eagle GT(s) I still like the tread pattern of the Eagle GT more but when it comes down to it grip is all that matters and wet traction and ability to displace water quickly anyway here is the picture of the cracked rim on one of my M 66 wheels

These 420 G Getrag gearboxes are really tough and bad ass... The M62 and the Getrag 420g is one of the best engine/gearbox marriages in car history... All of the most bad ass BMW manuals have them... M3, M5, 540, 740, 840, and Z8 of that general era have it in them... You can get at least the gearbox I know you'll need a lot more than just that but the gearbox runs about 700 bucks used on eBay which if they function I think is a pretty damn good price considering it would cost you about 8000 bucks to have it rebuilt and there's only one person in the world who is actually certified to do that and he's based out of like Iceland or something crazy
My Dinan 540 is now officially 100% mechanically perfect with the exception of two low-pressure power steering hoses going from the reservoir to the cooling coil and from the coil to the steering box have a minor minor drip... All in the past few months I have had the front and rear suspension all rebuilt with Lemförder suspension parts, had cross drilled brembo brake pads and rotors put on the front and back had a timing chain overhaul and full engine clean out by my Dinan specialist after which he put a stage 4 set up on my engine (hi flow throttlebody, MAF, CAI, software). I put on Magna flow exhaust new HJS catalytic converter's custom welded into the magna flow exhaust system, new driveshaft transmission mounts flex disc joint New fender well splash guards and underbody splash guards new MK 4 DVD based navigation computer to replace my MK III (cd rom), New cupholders new center console insert fix my headliner with spray adhesive got even a new set of M 66 parallels and now have new tires on them (Continental extreme contact DW) I have been driving a 2001 540i Sport since 2004 and put over 175k miles myself between the two different ones I've had over 100k on my current... And I'll tell you in all these years I have driven nothing like this I have never driven anything this damn solid with basically 0 miles on the suspension brakes and steering, and all sensors... The tightness of everything is amazing... Over all this restoration the best thing I did was bring the M62 mojo back by replacing the MAF and o2 sensors which made an UN BELIEVABLE power difference... Which inspired me to do more and more
