I tried the harbor freight kit, which was labeled mitivac, so I thought it would be ok. Stupid thing falls apart if you pump to fast. Garbage

I recently did my V8 with a big wrench and hammer.... I tried the proper tool method first but wouldn't budge.... then I tried hammer a few times with no luck.... finally did a full-power golf swing and knocked it loose 1st try

Tried to diagnose a cylinder three misfire. Swapped the coils, returned to three. Pulled the plug and had oil on the threads and appeared fouled. Cleaned it best I could and swapped it with cylinder 1 which also had oil. Looks like I’ll be going VCG and Vanos sooner than I would have liked. Also changed out some old brittle vacuum hoses while I was there

Thanks for the tip. Did that last summer along with replacing the intake boots. I just didnt have any spare vacuum hose at the time and just never got around to it. Also did a smoke test with the paint can method, no leaks that I could find

Why not DIY? None of those sound terribly difficult.

Front subframe has to come down for the oil pan gasket Not fun, especially on your back, as the steering column shaft is extraordinarily difficult to remove with limited leverage.

The oil pan gasket on the i6 requires dropping the entire front subframe. It’s a big job especially if you don’t have a lift

Ride quality, no. There is a significant reduction in engine/cabin NVH, though. You don't need to remove the subframe to DIY the engine mounts; just undo the bolts and jack the engine up from underneath on the oil pan. It's plenty strong enough.

Doesn't sound that bad. I dropped the whole front subframe on my M5 when I did the rod bearings. But I am crazier than most people on here, so...

Yeah, lift or not. Just like rod bearing job the engine has to be supported from the top and lifted up and the subframe being dropped. Labour skills are pretty similar and similarly intensive b/w the two.

I agree it’s not particularly demanding but it is labor and time intensive. I plan on doing mine later this year but I only recently was able to keep my car in a private garage

Club choice? I think I'd go 5 iron probably. I have trouble hitting an iron longer than that and I don't think you want to go to a wood or a hybrid.

Hmmm. I've got that one and no problems at all. Used it for a number of things. Works fine although I'm slightly careful with it, because sure plastic, but plastic doesn't have to / shouldn't mean totally fragile and unusable. Plastic can be perfectly / remarkably durable and strong as evidenced by all the plastic crap we have these days that doesn't actually break. Guys will crap on plastic when something breaks but totally ignore/don't-notice the fact that about 100 more things around them are made of polymers and are not breaking all the time, sometimes even in very harsh applications.

But back to topic - I recently used mine in a push/pull setup to help my pressure bleeder. I pressurize the MC, then at each corner hookup the Mityvac to suck it through even faster. (Plus the mity vac comes with that little fluid collector that acts as an airlock). Worked great.

Yeah. Recently I cranked up the swaybar settings on my M3 and the results were so tremendous that I'm thinking about biting the bullet and finally upgrading the front swaybar on the wagon, which I stupidly didn't do when headers and M5 steering box were going in. But I dread doing the subframe drop on the ground in my tiny garage.
