Fixed the shifter trim in the green wagon. It had a slight crack in the bottom and was getting more pronounced. So I fixed it with epoxy, filed the bottom surface, which took a layer of the technical graphite finish off, I squared it off, buffed the plastic finish, and dressed it with an M logo from BMW for the sport wheels. Does this make me a poser extraordinaire?
Also, coming back to work after my lunch break, I noticed my mileage on the odometer, missed the lucky sevens by 2 miles.

Nate, are undersized bearings available for the S62 crank?
A good machine shop could turn the journals down so you could still use that crank.

Yes, but I bought a used crank from a friend. It is still in spec, according to him (I will verify that, and have it lightly polished), which may enable me to use the bearings I already have.

The engine is ready for plucking. Gonna try to tear down into the timing cover today.

Decided today that I cant wait anymore, and took out my 540, from winter sleep.

On my way to the garage, I managed to run out of fuel Went to pick up my Discovery, drove it to get some gas, and back to BMW

Finally I can enjoy it again

Hopefully I will deal with few very little rust spots on trunk and front skirts, so it won't go any further, otherwise pretty rust free.

Replaced headlight lenses with new ones from ECS. Real easy on a pre-facelift. Tuck with the original amber corners. They came with new gaskets, lower mounting brackets, upper seals, and hardware. Should have done them before I replaced all the other parts.

New Stabilus trunk struts installed. These work just like OEM (Stabilus is OEM) because they don't have too much force like many of the cheap aftermarket struts. No lifting of the trunklid open when you click the trunk release. $50.71 Shipped WITH tax, and lifetime warranty from Amazon Prime. I'm happy.

LED upgrade for the Angel Eyes installed tomorrow after I get off work.

Put a new set of Riken Raptor tires on it. Also put a new B+ terminal cover on. The freaking windshield is coming loose from a poor job that some bozo did when the windshield was replaced. So, gotta have that resealed. I found out when pulling off the rotten windshield trim, preparing to replace it. Those will be included in my next post to this thread. The fun just never stops.

Replaced little bushings on oil filter housing, they cost like 2€ each, but seems that didn't bother previous owners...

Also "waxed" it with new hybridceramic, pretty happy with the result, gives good shine.

Ps. Don't buy Chinese cupholders, I bought before the car went for winter storage, and yesterday when I tried to put soda can in there it snapped xD well I was expecting that, waiting for the cheap and durable version now.

When I was in my early 20's my car was broken into and my brand new blaupunkt mp3/cd dash unit was stolen. They got in by shattering the driver's side window. It was snowing that day and I had to take time off work to source a new/junkyard window, drive 30 miles (in the car with the broken window) to get it, and then install it. By the time it came to installing the new window, workmanship was the last thing on my mind. However, If it were to happen today, I'd definitely vacuum the glass out.

I'm really on borrowed time on mine at 218000+ miles. Still have the PM replacement pump in my trunk that I bought last year. With warmer weather here, maybe I'll be motivated to do the PM R&R outside in the driveway with the doors open and battery disconnected. This is much better than getting motivated on the side of the road in a rain storm.

Continuing engine tear down. Slower than I’d like, but this is a complex engine. And I picked up a cold today that did not help.

    3A94A3A5-3EB5-4C2A-9B36-17E2DE9B8B50.jpg

Also discovered that my right rear Dinan by JRZ damper is leaking. Great...
Since I’ll have the rear suspension apart, I would like to replace the rusty rear springs with non-Titanic ones. I need to replace the rear sway bar as well for the same reason, but that’s an easy fix later.

Some progress! Whats your plan? I assume full disassembly at this point since crank needs to be either machined or replaced (as you got a good used one). Are you doing rings or anything with the pistons? Any head work? Good luck Nate.

Another opportunity to spend Nate's $$$.
If your not replacing the rings I'd clean the ring grooves, resolder the vanos PC boards, powder coat the front of the engine and valve covers.
    Looks like fun, good luck.
