Nope, no setup required. Very possible the clutch is DOA. I've had good experiences with Mahle-Behr.

Anyone have any brilliant ideas for pilot bearing removal? I've tried a small slide hammer (2lb) and smashing in wet shop towels, but no dice. The bearing is IN there tight.

Going to rent a 5lb slide hammer tomorrow.

Thanks a lot for the paper advice. Turned out very good! Now some clear coat then buff when dry.

Well it is done now, quite obvious line, but I think it is because of the spray being a bit different color than the car itself.

Took my 540 to the .25 cent car wash this morning then onto the pretty much deserted highway for a high speed run to air dry it. Then to the Labor Day car show in ABQ, 400+ car, not one BMW. Everything else was there.
The featured car this year was pre 1989 English cars.

Changing out the driver door lock actuator of my e39. The plastic sleeve of the Bowden cable crumbled when I took the lock mechanism out of the door. I placed an order for a new cable. It will be out of commission for a few days. I am taking the e38 in for a new headliner tomorrow. Looks like me and the truck for a few days. Always good to have a few spare vehicles just in case.

How did you know the issue was the door lock actuator? Dealing with the same issue in my X5.

finally, finally, after owning the car for like 3 years, i FINALLY replaced the rear hatch and glass gas struts
but man it was a pain. the struts weren't too bad but those little plastic coverings that keep the wires in check, such a pain to remove and put back together

by the way, a cheat code for that job is to unbolt the actual ball joints the struts sit on, you can get to them under the rear headliner, not difficult or time consuming to reach, although be careful not to crack your D pillar plastic

i legit forgot that the hatch will essentially self-open if you pop it with the keyfob, since the hatch struts have those huge springs on them
Looking for an e39 Touring black carpet set, including the rear cargo cubbies and side sections!
ALSO looking for 540i 6speed manual transmission sets (2001+ pedals with switches, driveshaft, gearbox), for the 6speed swap! Probably not for a while....

Failing door lock actuators are a common issue with these cars. The door lock will be slow to move when locking or unlocking, sometimes not moving at all. Don't think lubrication will fix it, it doesn't.

I have changed out 8 door lock actuators now on my 5 and 7 series and it fixed the issue in every case. Oh, and I replaced 6 out of 8 window regulators.....

The next week could be interesting. I’m going to push as hard as I can to have the car ready for Bimmerfest. Gonna be tough, as I still need to do a lot of stuff. Hopefully just reassembly, though, which is easier.

I've got a Colgan I haven't used in many years, but it was for the older bumper style so it might not fit your '03 car.
Got the covers for the mirrors too.

mirror covers i'm not worried about, since the square mirrors i have are getting replaced with m5 reps soon anyway, probably right after this trip
another complication is that i have an M bumper :/
if i had known it'd take this long i would have ordered them a month ago

Clear bra > anything else. It’s not hideous and old fashioned, nor will it scratch the ever loving hell out of the clear coat... unlike a certain vinyl product.

i called a local place that does clear bra installs, supposedly very good, $995, which is...quite a lot...
i'm beginning to think it might not be worth doing protection since i'm respraying the bumper anyway (from sun damage) and the hood has a decent dent in it so it'll need dent repair and probably a respray

Just drive the car and let it get chips. Rock chips give a car character. My 540it is absolutely covered in rock chips and has them on almost every panel, but it doesn’t bother me because it wears its 208k miles with pride.
