I gotta look that up, was interesting to follow, don't know why I lost track of it. Been thinking of just throwing a Mishimoto on my credit card and be done with radiator woes.

Garage looks awesome!!! Just seems so much cleaner too.

I had the same thing happen to my 528i one day when it was equally as cold. I had to use a screw driver to push the locking mechanism in the door, then I sprayed it down with some silicone lube. Problem gone.

    Thanks!
Well, the temperature got up to 30 today, and I tried opening / closing the door when I got home tonight.
And, the door opens and closes correctly.
I am assuming the latch froze.

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …

Would definitely recommend staying away from mishimoto. They don't last very long. Sure, they have a lifetime warranty, but it sucks when your car is down for 2 weeks every other year waiting on a replacement.

I highly recommend CSF, as we use them on all of our shop track cars, and my SCd car that sees some heavy duty daily duty and occasional track time

picked up my bank 1 head from a local bmw indie that replaced the two bent exhaust valves. shiny and new, although i'm now $150 poorer

    IMG_20180118_200335.jpg

he warned me that a few of the intake valves had a decent gap in their seat, although he did lap them, i can see what he meant by shining a light past them as he did, although this one is the only one i noticed light coming through

    IMG_20180118_205225.jpg

suffice to say if i put the head on and do a compression test and that cylinder is like notably lower than the rest.....ugh

You need to change those valves, your compression will be very low, the engine will backfire thru the intake.
The intake valves need to be closed tight when the plug fires to ignite the air/fuel.

+1, that's bad. You probably need the whole head checked, and a complete valve job.

the head was essentially checked as the two exhaust valves were replaced and he said four of the intake valves had light gaps. the above one was the one i really noticed, but there was also this one that has a single point light gap
he didn't mention any other issues

Checked and ignored? If you're gonna reinstall that... That's just stupid. Good luck.

That head needs to go back and change out all of the valves, needs to be hot tanked, replace the valve stem seals, lap/cut the valve seats, and resurface the head. It is pointless to reuse that head without fixing all other issues.

alright then, if the head is so mangled, why was the engine running fine aside from the cylinder 3 misfire when i did that seafoam treatment back when i thought it was just a sticky valve seal?
i can understand replacing the valves that have light penetration on them though

Hey Joe - I'm certainly not the resident expert here, but any airgap between the valve and the seat when "seated" to me is a red flag. I am rather surprised that those were not mentioned as a 'need to address' at the time the two valves werereplaced. To me that is definitely a "stop prior to proceeding and discuss with owner" point there.
I couldn't begin to determine and explain the reasons that it ran fine outside that cly3 misfire prior, but I feel you are totally at risk having those cylinder(s) with the new-found valve issues becoming your new trouble point(s).

I don't even know you man, but I've been reading your posts. Surely none of us want to see you go through all that trouble again. (and sorry I called you Shirley...lol...). If this was a '70's Corolla, I'd still address it. Fix this now, or source another head....I'm sorry...unless you just have a $#!tload of free time, that's too much work for you to go through and potentially have to re-do...

I would say its entirely likely that the #3 "misfire" (having valves so bent that the never even come close to closing isn't really a "misfire", its a dead-jug) symptoms masked what otherwise would have been crap running on the other cylinders. With those valves not closing, it was NOT going to run right. Iv'e seen that so many times - some guy is all "yeah well before it was just this one problem but suddenly now there's all these other think. " Nope. Those other things were there, you just weren't running well enough to notice them. You aren' going to notice the other 5 holes in the sides of the bucket until you plug the big one at the bottom.

he did, and his explanation of what might happen is "losing a few horsepower", but looking at the gap now that's more than just a few horsepower
either way i have dropped another $77 on four new intake valves and valve seals from fcp euro.
If i can't find someone to borrow a valve spring compressor from someone in the MA area to do it myself before Tuesday...i'm just going to give it back to the indie again and let him replace those four.
then finally, maybe, finally i can put the car back together

Losing a few hp??? Judging from those pics I say that's pretty much a loss of compression for those cylinders.

    300HP / 8 = 37.5 HP per cylinder........ maybe 37.5 qualifies as a "few"

I'd fix everything while it's all apart. The 540it needs every bit of power it has to haul those 4000lbs. Especially if you plan on towing it (I know you've made a thread about that recently).

yeah...saw your other thread where you stated you "rage-bought" the valves you needed. Dude....I totally understand. Sorry you are having so much trouble.

GG - good ass-essment !! I was under the assumption Joe had compression in the other 7 jugs and this was the single suspect cylinder when it all shook out....but therez no wayz...(???) I must have missed some details in it all, like no comp test on the other bank...?? I have to scan this stuff pretty fast at times...so could have missed details which lead to a wonky reply on my part...

Guys - I've really only seen one good V-5 motor...and it was nestled neatly in between two very expensive wheels. Plus, if Joe wanted a 6-cylinder I bet he would have just bought a 6-cyl wagon in the first place...

You're on the road to recovery my man...should be a short trip from here !!

no, i did a comp test on all 8 cylinders very early on after the misfire, which is what started me down this road, took pictures of the pressure gauge too.
and i miss remembered, they weren't all around 180, they were all around 200, which is great

also, trying not to make this a "wow look at joe's problem" thread, it is a what did you do today thread after all.
