Installed the top half of the new, OE sound insulation:
Did that solve the old crayon smell ?

Bought a used M5 rear bumper. Hope to have it installed within the next couple of weeks.

Took the M5 out for a very short spin, just enough to bring the oil up to temp and a 5 min jaunt. Afraid to drive it lest I get chipped paint on my freshly painted front end before the Xpel wrap.

Finally got around to installing the new rubber windshield seal. It had been sitting in the garage for at least two years:
Performed a rear suspension refresh on my daily 540i. That makes two rear suspension refreshes this weekend, and two front suspension refreshes last weekend. My daily and my "project" car. I'm sure glad I bought the ball joint removal/installation tool.

Was one of 2 e39 wagons at today’s German Car Day at Larz, the other was a nice white 525i. Kid had a blast but didn’t manage a picture till he was absolutely spent for the day. Cut short a bit by rain but a great turnout.
Some really nice cars there today, and the Audi eTron was on display. That thing is baller.
Nice M1 too..

Ordered up 4 ABS sensors for the 528i as there is a random fault being tripped that now on all the time. No codes but the wiring jacketing is crumbling away. Next will be the module repair, as my bets are on that failure.

Replaced the aux fan on my 530i. Made a few DIY videos, here's part 1: how to remove the front bumper
link: https://youtu.be/DBJrYMj5gi8
Replaced passenger side tail light and wire assembly. Pin 3 was corroded and snapped off, so taillight did not work at all.
Also got a new 90 degree battery vent elbow as this was missing and I assume this is what caused my issue.
Easy job, however this was my first time soldering. That was the hardest part of the job for me.

Been a busy last few weeks.
I fixed the cracked inner headlight reflector housing with JB Weld, was actually easier than i thought. Also was able to install the metal headlight adjusters without opening the headlights, a bit more challenging but not that hard. Both headlights are back to running 100% sans the angel eye plug that broke off at the wire connection right at the base on BOTH sides. I plan on ordering the terminals to cut and re-crimp on new ones
Then I started out on addressing the coolant leak in the valley pan, broke 2 bolts taking off the rear coolant accumulator pipe and a plastic fuel vacuum line just fell apart in my hands.. while im waiting on bolts and a new vacuum line to arrive, I started pulling off all of the larger plastic parts out of the bay, ie. the header panel plastic, the filter housing trays, the windshield lower windshield trim. Replaced it all with brand new parts as the old parts were literally falling apart in my hands as i handled them. I gave everything a thorough cleaning while replacing the parts
I managed to crack the plastic radiator fan shroud leaning on the coolant cap to reach to the back of the engine. It was yet another brittle piece of plastic. I pulled it off and replaced that as well with a brand new part.
The front plastic front air duct that sits behind the front bumper was also in the same brittle condition. I also replaced that with a brand new part.
Fixed the valley pan and also used my gun cleaning swabs and some TB cleaner to clean the intake valves too since they were exposed. I wish i would have taken pictures, they came out very nice and clean.
I wire brushed the mating surfaces to remove corrosion left behind by the coolant that was leaking, left it smooth and shiny like new
Like an idiot, i put one of the gaskets on backwards on the rear coolant accumulator,.. when I ran water through the system to flush it out the first round, there was a nice waterfall behind the front driver side wheel. Pulled it all off and reversed the gasket to the correct way and flushed the system.. 1gal of coolant and 1 gal of distilled water , i still need to go through a full bleed to finish adding the other half gallon of mix.
I pulled off the brake cooling ducts and gave them a thorough cleaning. They had never been cleaned, ever.
Replaced the secondary air pump that had failed. The Dinan intake FLIPS the pump upside down and water doesnt properly drain out of it. I took a drill to the top of the pumps cover to allow water to drain out. The Dinan bracket for the pump was rusted to hell, .. i wire brushed it to fresh metal, cleaned it good and gave it a good coating of plasti-dip.
I bought a factory navigation retrofit cable, and hooked up all of the nav components i had standing by for the retrofit. I updated the nav computer to v32 on the bench but i still need to go through and make sure it all works good before i rip apart the interior to run the harness. I'm not sure if the BM53 is working or not.
Up next i'll be replacing the fuel hose in the engine bay, polishing my Dinan strut brace, and ordering all new underbody plastics and a new M5 front bumper before she goes to the body shop for paint.
All parts replaced with original BMW parts.

Complete cooling system refresh, but wait, that's not all:
I got a text from my 20-year old son (who drives the E39). He said that the car became really hard to steer and his temperature gauge started climbing into the red. I immediately called him and told him to STOP DRIVING NOW!!!!. Had the car towed to my garage and began the process of picking out little pieces of shredded serpentine belt from his engine bay. I decided now would be a good time to do a cooling system refresh, so I grabbed my laptop and started ordering parts. I decided to go in an start pulling off parts while I waited for the new ones to arrive. Once I got the fan and shroud off, I noticed that the tensioner pulley was a little wobbly. Once I started to investigate I realized the one of the bolts holding the tensioner on was snapped off. Okay, no problem, I have a bolt extractor. But I didn't really have room to get in there with a standard drill. I've always wanted a close quarters/right angle drill. Off to Harbor Freight to pick up a new drill. Got the bolt extracted only the realize the other intact bolt was loose and the threads were all stripped out of the hole. Picked up a Heli-Coil set for an M8x1.25 bolt and went to work. Got to use my new right angle drill again. Retapped and inserted the Heli-Coil. I was tempted to just do the other hole while I was in there, but didn't. So the root cause for the fan belt failure was resolved. Now, on to the cooling system refresh. Pulled all cooling system components out (radiator, water pump, expansion tank, thermo housing), flushed, replaced everything and put it back together. Topped off the cooling system and started it up. Noticed a tiny drip coming from the top driver's side of the radiator. It was that little right angle vent fitting that attaches to the expansion tank. Pulled it out and found the O-ring was all mangled. Called BMW dealership, they didn't have the part. Found out that Mercedes carries the same part and they had two. Finally, all back together and running great. Hardest cooling system refresh I've ever done.
Wasnt today, but a few days ago I
-Replaced window regulator for the passenger side front door. While doing this I broke the power window connector for that side, and am unsure of the wiring to reconnect it
-Replaced missing butyl tape underneath the vapor barrier
-Replaced washer nozzles. FOund that I ordered the ones that dont go with the intensive washer system, so they only have one input. I believe adding a 'Y' connection will remedy this
-Replaced headlight washer nozzles. Found that the feed hose from the tank (behind the fender liner) is brittle and complete junk.
-Cut open nonbakeable headlight housing and replaced the lens. Was a real PITA, butchered the part but it looks fine from outside.
-Replaced 3rd brake light
-Replaced turn signal bulb
