Can anyone recommend a filter/dryer/whatever else is needed for painting? I need to clean the air up I'm sure. It probably won't be permanently mounted. We'll use it for the paint work and then put it away until needed the next time. I have a cheap trap for water to protect my air tools already.
A great ending is all you'll see..

Two coats of yellow are enough, it’s a solid not metallic.

Here’s what I’m using at the compressor. The right side housing has beads in it that turn pink after they have absorbed moisture. You can bake the moisture out and reuse them or toss them and just refill it with new beads.
The moisture filter on the gun can’t be refilled, I replace it when the beads start to look pink, it’s time to replace that one.

    And on my gun.

Thank you. I'll probably be in my paint shop tomorrow and I"ll check on the paint while there.

On your filter system you have the valve heading towards the floor. Is that an additional air outlet your feeding? Does your manual or auto drain? If auto, is it a problem spitting on your floor when you don't expect it? Do you find the digital gauge accurate? And finally.. sorry for all the questions.. how nant CFM's does your FDG5 require? Your compressor tank looks pretty serious, how many CFM's does it provide? I think mine is only 7.6cfm and I've never hurt for air volume when cerakoting but some of these paint guns are asking for >10cfm's..
A great ending is all you'll see..

I used to have a few Sharp water traps on my air lines. It would be great to get a dehumidifier in there too. Forgot that you had asked me this the other night.

The floor valve goes to a 25’ hose, the other one goes up to a 75’ hose reel mounted to the ceiling.
    I’m using a manual drain.
The digital gauge is accurate as compared to a conventional gauge. I like it’s small size.
The FLG5 pressure gets adjusted to 23 PSI with just the air flowing, no paint flowing (trigger pulled just enough to get air flowing).
Gun spec says 23 CFM. I find that hard to believe as that would empty my tank pretty quick. I can paint almost the whole door without the compressor kicking on. They have plenty of guns that use less air, probably cost more but you did say under $500.
    The compressor is a 60 gallon 2 stage, 240V 3.7 HP, 175 PSI. 11CFM at 90 PSI, 11.4 CFM at 40 PSI.

    Here’s the gun specs.

Question for your guys who replaced the halo rings with led rings, do you also remove the fiber optical cables from the light housing?

Yes. I used the old angel eye bulb connector as a pass through for the bi-xenon cutoff solenoid, and the connector for the LED angel eyes. I ended up using soldering the two LED driver boxes (per headlight) together, and glueing them to the inside of the housing, behind the OEM angel eye shroud. The wiring for the angel eye plug came from an old aftermarket LED angel eye with the adapter that connects to the OEM plug.

Thanks, I will do that too.

Another question, I am thinking to 2K clear coat the lenses, what grit of sanding before clear coating? 800 grit, 1000 grit or 1500 grit?

Buy the 3M kit. Once done protect with Xpel film or something similar.

Thanks. I was hoping that was a second line. It makes sense to do it that way. I want to run a line to my blast cabinet and dry air is better so it make sense.

My air compressor is going to be the weak point. It's a 60 gallon tank but a single stage and 110v. Hopefully I can match it to an adequate gun.

More research is necessary. Thank you.

After researching and trying different ones on different headlights I've settled on using the sandpaper to prep them like in the vid, and a protecting coat also in the vid. But I went with the Cerakote kit for several reasons. First, it comes with different grits of sandpaper and a velcro block which is easier t use than by hand, and I imo the most important part of the process to keep from having to redo the procedure is the product you use to coat the lens with. For the last ten years or so ceramic based products have earned recognition because they out last anything else out there. And the Cerakote products have UV treatments which as he mentions in the vid is vital. Basically the Cerakote kit is a better collection of superior products. Very easy to use, fast, really nice product..

Permanent results require spraying with clear. Not that the cerakote kit isn’t good; it’s great. I just think for all the work required there, go another half step and spray them.

Today I put the transmission pan back. This time I put some blue loctite on the bolts. Every time I take the pan down and put it back on, it seems like the bolt heads are sweating a little and I have OCD about oil leaks. Oil must escape somehow under/over the gasket until it reaches the threads of a bolt and then it starts trickling. I’ll be back with an update on this.

"What did you do to your E39 today V2.0."

Getting ready for a 1000 mile trip to WV and back for work so I did a topside oil change on Monday, and since there seems to be a potential for hitting the remnants of Ian, I had fun checking and repairing vapor barriers today.

Front and rear passenger side seemed to take small repairs nicely.

Quick door card fix while it was off…

Driver side rear door was so bad it wouldn’t repair so off came the gunk.

Had a new barrier upstairs ready to go, altho the old one would have worked and will serve as a spare. Cleaned the bottom of the door area of some debris and made sure it drained well.

Driver door was done lately but I took the card off to double check. All good. Hope this keeps things dry!

Also got new shoes, my Michelins are pretty old and cracking, decent wear, and both rears are plugged… so I figured it was time l.

Went with Conti ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus that arrived as I was working on the doors.

Off to the shop tomorrow for mount, balance and an alignment.

Applying Xpel or equivalent is the biggest factor in making sure the lens stays looking new for very long time. Otherwise the clear coat will wear out in a few years.

So…. Here’s a stupid question. How the hell is a clear coat supposed to stick on to a polished plastic lens??? I don’t believe in the clear coated lenses. Rock chips alone would get the coating peeling off left and right.

Thats what I thought too. I used Diamont clear on my Mini headlights. Its supposed to have more UV protection than most. Its been a bit over 6 years now, and they’re getting hazy again, but I’m in south Florida where the sun is intense.
