I run 46 on my 16s, I would probably drop it to 40-42 on 18s

Every big bump in the road is painful, but I've gotten used to it since it's always been like that.
Actually I find the ride to be surprisingly better. It feels like the shocks (I have coilovers) dampen the road imperfections better than it did previously. I may have noticed a slight increase in tyre noise but overall I like it though. However, one noticeable difference is that the car pulls a little to the right now, so an alignment is due. I'm going to wait on that till I can order rear upper control arms. Mine has a lot of play in it and no wonder why the rear end is loose and has a propensity to step out during fast sharp turns.

Maybe the roads around here just suck. There's a lot of cracks in the local roads here due to the heat, it makes for a very bumpy ride in any car. The highways are okay though. I'm sure a lot of my harshness is coming from my crappy rear tires, that's what my wheel shop told me.

No. Meyle parts are generic chinese parts. I wouldn't recommend them. Meyle HD parts are only available for certain components; they are reengineered from the OEM specification. Examples include the solid rubber thrust arm bushings, the solid rubber touring rear subframe bushings, and sway bar endlinks.

    FCP Euro sells Meyle HD.

I run 34/38 F/R around town, but I pump them up to 38/41 for long trips. The roads around SoCal SUCK. I pump them up for slightly better wear and fuel economy, at the expense of some comfort. Highways are relatively smooth, though, so it's a worthwhile tradeoff.

We too have some bad roads here but surprisingly the car handles the imperfections quite better than I expected. At least it now handles like a rack-n-pinion car.

Yep. I think Meyle had a site where you could look for HD parts and see what was available at one point but I just went on their online catalog and it kind of blows. You can't see / search / filter "all parts" for a car at this point, you have to select some 'sub-sub-group' and as with many sites, their 'parts hierarchy tree' is weird and makes bizarre sense and is really hard to browse to find crap.

They have an app apparently, maybe that will let you view by model & sub-brand (aka HD) without searching.

    incoming potentially stupid question.
dr vanos sells a rebuilt vanos set for $800 with a $300 refundable core deposit.
    http://www.drvanos.com/index.php/m62tu-v8-341827
is replacing the seals in a vanos unit worth that much? Or would i be much better off just following the beisan procedure
    http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu..._procedure.htm
and buying his seal and tool kit for $100?
    http://www.beisansystems.com/products.html
Looking for an e39 Touring black carpet set, including the rear cargo cubbies and side sections!
ALSO looking for 540i 6speed manual transmission sets (2001+ pedals with switches, driveshaft, gearbox), for the 6speed swap! Probably not for a while....

$500 for essentially VANOS rebuilding service? That is STUPID pricey! Absolutely NO in my book! There are eBay and other sellers who basically buy the Beisan stuff and sell them completely done.

Ex: $100 each. Not a recommendation, just an example. There are others. No idea who's good or bad but I know people have used some of these guys with good luck.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-M62TU-Va...-/332187169940
Same guy seems to sell one without core charge for $250, so factor that into your thinking about $500 after core returned.

Also - since you're semi-local... Ima bet Cwise will do them for you for a reasonable charge and no shipping charges as long as you find a place to meet up... (and I think maybe his fam has place in The Shrew' so something should be workable for meetup...)

Or just do it yourself. I had Jim do mine cuz he had the tool already and offered to help but I'd easily just do it meselfs otherwise.

yup but i'm wondering if dr vanos does something much more in depth than just seal, like if they remake the entire thing from the ground up with cleaned and machined parts...or something like that

    Don't be ridiculous.

Rebuilt Vanos adjustment unit for the 4.4l or 4.6l M62tu V8 (BMW or Range Rover) with upgraded Viton O-rings and Teflon seals.
    Same as everybody else.

OK maybe they use some gnarly solvent to remove the light oil film baked on the parts so woohoo they look cleaner than if you did it yourself. But then again, so does the eBay guy from the look of things.

But they are clearly the same used VANOS they get sent, rebuilt just like everybody else, likely using the exact same Beisan parts.

To piggyback on this discussion of vanos I've done nothing to my 98 528i m52 single vanos because I haven't seen a thread that said it really should be done. I've only seen threads about the m52tu and the 540i is that seal and tool something I should budget for and do?

i'm the kind of sucker that gives folks the benefit of the doubt before assuming price gouging, so there's gotta be SOMETHING that they're charging so darn much for. i'll send them an email at some point and just be like "what the heck?"

cwise doing it locally would be great though. i have a double paycheck in november so i might buy all the components late october and start the disassembly then. gunna be chain guides, vanos, valve cover and timing cover gaskets, valley pan gaskets, the works

At least for dual-VANOS applications, Dr. Vanos claims to rebuild or replace the bearings to quiet some of the rattle.

Good info here... was researching how much it was gonna cost me to rebuild the Vanos when I do my guides and the pricing from dr Vanos seems a little high for just some rebuilt units. I don’t plan on doing the job myself, I’d love to but I don’t think I have the patient and stress level to handle it myself.

I thought it would be terrible as well and then I broke down and did the seals and press job on two vanos units from my old E38. Way over blown as far as I'm concerned. Yes, you need a little patience and good press to complete but it wasn't a big aggravation or anything. A very good light source was helpful when doing the seals and rings with the pick tools..
