Sad puppies, you are supposed to dodge the bouncing rocks not hit them......
Changed out the DOA meyle fan clutch for a BEHR fan clutch and...
...it behaved exactly the same, in that seized way where its blowing way too much air even when cold
what's going on with these clutches?
sounds exactly like this other video

hmm, i'll give that a shot, although i let it run up to temp from a cold start, then gave it some decent revs (not very high, i'm terrified of the fan exploding from excessive rotational force)

No that is NOT THE 'CHEAT CODE', that is a TERRIBLE idea. We've been fighting the one crappy-but-long-'always appears on google search' write up that tells people to do that for years. Its massively and utterly stupid. Please do not keep suggesting that to people. Completely stupid.
Its just like the bad sunroof thread where the guy didn't figure out that the wind deflector pops out with no tools in 5 seconds so he tells people to try to pull pin retainers out oh gee except those aren't made to come out like that so they break so then make a replacement with rubber tubing.... No, you just take the things off in 5 seconds with no tools, fool. But unfortunately his dumbass thread keeps showing up on google.
Uh. No. NEVER pull the headliner down and mess with the ball joints bolted through the roof. Utterly idiotic.
When you do it the right way, and are ready with some sort of (easily found lying around for lots of guys...) make-shift tools, the ends of the struts pop right off and back on. There are now a good handful of threads on this and several ways to do it, including using various kinds of tubing (copper or pvc), or just long prybars and some other tricks. I bet Snotty can do 'em blind-drunk in the dark in half an hour. Unbolting those ball-joints is retarded.

Lol! Take the headliner out just to change out the tailgate struts???? That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard of. So now you risk breaking all kinds of expensive interior bits, just to do something easily done the right way. No wonder his poor e39 is always falling apart. Feel bad for the next owner.... most likely, the car ends up in the yards, one more e39 down.
Set the controls for the heart of the sun
to be completely honest, I've gotten pretty tired of you two, i try my best not to bite back but i do have SOME limits. I don't believe it's possible to selectively block people on here, which is unfortunate. I feel kind of bad for newer users who have to put up with the concentrated essence of condescending that often drips off your posts
anyway, yes revving the engine up did de-clutch the fan clutch, so that's all good, but man it's loud below 3k when going from a stop.
Also: today i helped my family by towing about 1,500 pounds of concrete aggregate, the tow system worked great, but of course braking performance was reduced to about 60% and acceleration to about 70% of normal. the GVWR of the trailer was about 2,100, which is more than what the enclosed 5x8 trailer will weigh fully loaded

The kicker is the wiring. Much easier if you have nav stock (http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/179456). I didn't so finding the ABS speed wires is hell .
Only got 1 confirmed from under dash wire splices. I have to get the other 3 from the ABS / DME.
It takes serious wire know-how.

man, an actually working mechanical fan is quite the noisy piece on a hot day with the A/C on, can't really hear the engine below 3k anymore due to the air noise but past 3k it shuts up
of course this means the melye fan clutch i thought was DOA was probably not DOA, but now a behr unit lives in there so....fcp RMA here i go

Less than 36 hours until Bimmerfest. Still have so much to do.
Installed oil pressure and AFR gauges with the new and final update to my custom pod by Ryan.
New Zimmermann drilled rotors with custom machined Raybestos ST43 pads, and garagistic brass guide pin bushings all around.
Still need to install the freshly powdercoated bigduckclub roll bar and Sparco harnesses, and wrap everything together, all while studying and taking 2 more finals, washing 2 BMWs, loading up two other race cars and haulers, and so much more. This has been one of the more stressful weeks.
Sent from my LG-H932 using Tapatalk
called module masters to find out where my abs module is..... (still investigating......)
maybe next week I can get it inspected and retire the POS saturn....
Finally got around to retiming my M62TU.
She is running like a top. Took her out last night for about 30 min., she pulls smooth and consistent thru out the whole rpm range!! New Vanos seals! Glad to have finally wrapped this bad boy up.

Thanks Setho!! We need a pic of that beautiful engine bay. I love shiny colorful parts in our engines, makes everything look purdy.
Thanks Philly!! I saved my 540 from an untimely death!! Loooking forward to another 100kkk from this car. I absolutely enjoy this car.
I’d like to thank Jim for his patience with me, and Danny as well, excellent Vanos service Dan!
And as well as all the info out there I used for this project, Besian Systems, GAS, and this forum, Topaz had a nice write up also.
Cheers!
Manny, what did you find wrong when you retired it?
I didn't see a clutch fan, better get it on, it's going to be a HOT summer.
Nice 335 vs Vette video, was that your 335?
Yeah, when I opened it up it was not in timing....
So I’m assuming I did not keep proper tension on the lower tensioner when I installed bank 1 timing cover ( what a jackass of me, I noticed but rolled the dice)...... or the timing got disturbed upon initial timing ( you know how “ it’s suggested to turn the motor cw twice, then recheck timing) well the first time I did not do that also, since GAS suggests it strongly, but being a lazy heathan that I am did not do that also initially( I paid for my evil ways..), second time around I did It and found that the timing had been disturbed so I had to retime it again, good thing I followed the suggestion this second time around of turning the engine twice and I even checked that the Vanos were also fully retarded second time around.
And yeah that’s my 335. I love that beast!

As for the fan clutch, I wanted to enjoy that V8 sound, rather than the school bus sound.
I’ll be doing an electric fan upgrade as well.
And take a look at the brakes, as they were a bit shimmy applying the brakes at high speeds yesterday ( I just went thru the whole suspension and brake system recently and replaced every component)
The fun never ends.
