2004 325i transmission slipping when cold

I have read tons of threads relating to this. I recently purchased this car with 89,000 miles. When I test drove it the car was at temperature so no slipping occurred. Surprise asked the god fearing owner and they said they never had the problem prior. I know it only started the day I bought the car.
Called the dealer and they said check the fluid level. I did and it ran out when i removed the plug. kind of a dark black liquid. consistency felt ok but not the reddish fluid I expected.

Question to anyone who has had the problem. Is there a fix besides replacement? Dealer said don't do a fluid and filter service to it. is there any new software upgrades?

Most transmission slipping post are dated. just looking for new ideals.
    Thanks in advance.

Did you check the fluid with the car running and in P or N? The car also has to be level when you do this, otherwise you cannot properly check the fluid level.

The dealership has a requirement on their service paperwork to replace the fluid at 100k on the E-46's, but the fact that they don't know about it?

The easiest and cheapest thing to do is a filter and fluid change, I would start there as you don't have any other warning lights on?

Car was level running in Park at temperature. It only slips initially when you put it in Drive. After that it is fine all day until the next morning.

Do the fluid change, and if it is as dirty as you described, then it is time anyway.

Any special fluid? It has a green tag with the number 83220024359 on it.

No problem, the attachment are not going anywhere as they are here on the forum.

Also here is the 2004 Service checklist, and at the top is gives 100k for automatic transmission fluid change, I think it should be done by 75k.

I am having the same issue with my 2004 325 Ci and my transmission shop (after confirming my fluid levels were good), advised me this is a known issue. Commonly referred to as "Delayed P to D Engagement on Cold Start". I have a Technical Service Bulletin that I am happy to send you that describes the Situation, the Cause and the Correction. My understanding is that this issue can be fixed with a software flash. That said, I paid the local dealer $200 a couple of days ago and the issue remains. I have a low level of confidence that said local dealer did the software flash correctly.

yes, delayed park to drive is common, mine had it. Software update solved it. If it continues to slip after drive is engaged the first time, then this is not the issue. Mine used to only do it first thing in the morning, or when i left work after it sat for 8 hours.

Just a quick update. I chose to change the fluid with Castrol Dexron IV and filter after speaking to several Bimmer owners. I can say after flushing the fluid and new filter I have had no slipping in the first 4 days of operation. It appears to have a smoother shift as well through all gears.
