I think my guides went. I was doing 65 mph or so. Then suddenly lost power. I pull over and it had an extremely rough idle. Every time I tried to pull off it would die out. Disconnect MAF and no change. This morning I got trifecta lights and thought it had something to do with new cluster I put in. Pull codes with my laptop and I had camshaft position error 120. Hoping it was an intermittent problem I drove to work. Should have just stayed home. I am so stupid.
On the way home is when I had problems. I was stranded waiting on AAA for at an hour and a half. After finally getting towed, I got the car home and in the garage and nothing change. I replaced camshaft sensors and buddy brought over working MAF. No change. Now it wont even stay running rough. Finally stuck my hand into oil fill hole and chain feels really loose. Will drop oil pan tomorrow but now the car won't even turn over. Almost like it jump timing. At first I thought maybe a bad fuel filter and/or oil pump, but it is obvious I got more serious problems. When I got car from previous owner, the guides were done with 150k on the clock. It now has 221K. Ive been everywhere in this car. Texas, Florida, Atlanta 2 times just to mentioned a few places.
Kind of numb right now. Don't know if I'm going to fix, sale it or begin parting out. Today was just a bad day for me, I'm so sick right now. Probably won't even sleep.

Hopefully it's something other than guides. I really can't imagine them going bad so spectacularly.

geeez, hope its not as serious as it sounds. its like losing a family member suddenly.... good luck with your car situation
Well had the car towed to well respected BMW Indy in town today for a second opinion. I'm holding out hope for a positive report from his analysis. Worst case scenario, I will have him do my guides.
I miss not having my car.

Kinda crazy that the guides would fail again after only 70k miles, especially when you consider that the originals last 150k miles or more. Maybe the previous owner cheaped out on the parts or just straight up lied about doing the guides. Seems like there a lot of people who lie about the guides being done in order to sell a car nowadays...

I tried to start my 7 this evening and battery was dead, jumped it and it got SES light flashing then turned to solid SES,
i let it run for 10 minutes and then checked for codes, 6! SIX codes,
"-OMG WHt?!?!?!!?!"
thanks got it was just battery related, they went out one after other after battery got some juice in

So I got some good news today. It would appear my guides and chain are all intact and strong. Preliminary report from my Indy is that I have a bad oil pump and oil chain is loose. Also he is looking at crank sensor (seems to be intermittent problem), both camshaft position sensors need replacing. Vanos solenoids are leaking and need new seals, spark plugs have oil on them, and the fuel pump and fuel filter need replacing they are both originals with 2000 and 2001 stamp dates. Also looks like vacuum hoses are brittle and need replacing. While there this evening, I was able to see and here my car running with an extremely rough idle. My guy thinks he should have be back up and running this week.
So while I have been waiting for news on my car, I put in a little work this weekend:

I thinking about doing this:

Nice, good news, but still going to coast you some money tho

Glad to hear that your car is okay, and that the engine is not blown due to a failed timing guide/skipped chain

Pick my car up Friday from my Indy. I've been putting it thru the paces pretty hard with some spirited driving all weekend. So far all is well. I even think I have more high end now. It just seems so much more responsive and aggressive.
My Indy replaced both Camshaft Position sensors, fuel pump, fuel filter, 2 new fuel lines that were crack, oil chain adjustment, new oil pan gasket, maf sensor, new plugs and several vacuum leaks from worn out hoses. My problems seemed to have been fuel related.
I still need to do my VCG's and Vanos Solenoid gaskets. Probably will get that done in a week or so.
Just glad to be back in my car. Also knowing I now have a INDY to go when there are things I can't do. Peace of mind so to speak.

That is nice to hear that you got it sorted out, and if you did that much then you definitely have some improvements to it, vacuum leak can affect it for sure

Cograts! Come on over already so we can program that 4.6is cluster...
Thanks Max. And yeah I have a few more things that need to be done. But overall, I think I should be ok for a while with proper maintenance.

Ayal, I wish you were closer. But I will definitely hook up with you soon. However I think the next few weeks or so I will be focusing on the VCG job that got post-phoned because of the other repairs needed.
Glad you are back on the road Roy! What a relief it wasn't
