    GROM is brilliant!

The idea was to install a BM53 to gain AUX capability but, ultimately,
I chose the GROM-route to have AUX, Bluetooth and USB. I have yet
to use the USB and AUX but the Bluetooth is absolutely fantastic!

Playing Pandora or SiriusXM via the phone makes driving even better.
No CDs, no radio broadcasts of advertisements, just music of my choice
    in very good quality.

If you're looking into adding AUX/BT/USB capabilities, go with GROM.

Did you have to get anything special for a car with DSP?

    GROM is brilliant!

I have Dension Gateway 500s BT in my E60 and I'm very pleased with it as well. I guess it's similar to GROM. Steaming music via Bluetooth is fantastic.

    Just 1 E38, for now
Yea I like the grom. Bluetooth has been nearly flawless.

GROM is insanely great. I ordered a Bluetooth-only module that is only capable to pair phones via bluetooth for audio. There's an option to hook up a mic to the bluetooth-only module, but actual calling features aren't integrated into the steering wheel controls or the nav screen like the bigger modules are. I don't want all of that fluff. The Bluetooth sounds like CD quality or better for music.

You can. The Bluetooth module comes with a microphone on a very
long cable so it's easy to hide. The Bluetooth module's cable itself is
very generous already. Mounted the GROM in the boot, got the
Bluetooth module under the driver's seat.

I have to see how it work in mine with calls, since I haven't wired in
the microphone so maybe it works with the mic in the phone or
not at all. I'll report back on that.

Call audio works perfectly but I'm mute because the microphone
    is not plugged in.

Just to point out my car was a late 97 car but the connected for the 3 pin is different and grom said they didn't make one that fitted it. I had to return the kit to them for a refund

be worth checking the 3 pin first before you order as some 98 cars might be the same

+1. Million kudos goes to GROM. I have also ordered the same setup: AUX, USB, BT via DSP with adapter. Everything hooked up and working as expected. Absolutely fantastic upgrade. One thing noticed - sometimes GROm would not be recognized by the car on startup, but it can be resolved by shutting it down and starting the car up again. Might be worth to check for FW update.
One of the best upgrades I did to my car. Honestly. Hands free function is amazing, streaming from Android is smooth and wheel controls are working 100%.

Also my best words goes to GROm Support, these guys know what to advise.

Is there a video demo anywhere that you've seen? I'm interested in the unit, but all I seem to find are installation videos.

'99 740iL - Style 95s, 740i Sport front springs, Bilstein yellows, 01 taillights, Zionsville aluminium radiator w/ 2 speed e-fan, StealthOne/ValentineOne, MKIV Nav and 16:9 display, Inifinity Basslink w/remote gain control, factory Bluetooth, Chromeline interior, xboss Homelink/armrest panels, wood grab handles, Sport steering wheel, various 750 wood bits, LED interior lighting, black Alcantara headliner/rear deck/A/B/C pillars, Euro armrest, and other stuff I've probably forgotten about...

GROM is a little box of magic that replaces your CD changer and
gives your car AUX, Bluetooth and USB capabilities (depending
on which GROM module you choose). It really is the best setup
    for plug-n-play upgrading.

Their website has operation guides. It's very simple, though.

    After installation.

    - Turn on the radio (ignition on and/or engine on)
    - Select CD
    - Display reads "check CD"
    - GROM says "USB"

    To change mode:
    - Turn on radio
    - Select CD
    - Immediately hold ">" as if you wanted to select the next track
    - GROM says "AUX"

    To use Bluetooth
    - Turn on radio
    - Connect to GROM via Bluetooth

Bluetooth overrides the other functions so no mode selection is required.

Any idea how this would play with the factory bluetooth?

I'm guessing I'll just connect to both devices, set the BMW for voice only, and the grom for audio only.

Honestly, not a clue. You could just not use the factory
Bluetooth and use only the GROM for voice & audio.

Hmm, perhaps. Wouldn't I lose voice dialing and the ability to use the phone button on the wheel if I did that? How does the phone integration work with the grom?

As one would say in Germany: Da bin ich überfragt.

Or, more simply, I haven't a clue. The good people at
GROM could probably answer it for you, though.

What 3 pin need to be checked. How do we make sure that the 3 pin from GROM matches the 3 pin on the e38 model.

My understanding about grom is it has two units. One the main module that has the USB/AUX inputs, and an optional BT (Bluetooth) module. Does the BT module integrate w/e38's microphone or do we have to use the GROM microphone for cell phone audio functionality?

I am guessing that the USB is used to play MP3 off memory sticks. When using USB, are you able to browse/navigate the content of the USB Mem Stick to choose the audio tracks you want to play?

My hands free calling works great. When a call comes in, you just hit the phone button on the steering wheel. I ran the mic through the rubber boot in the driver side of the rear deck. Then ran it up the C pillar and tucked it under the headliner where the door seals are, running it all the way to the front by the visor.

You can use the USB aux cable for memory stick or ipod etc.

It's the 3 pin which goes to the cd changer that needs to be checked

You would have to do a navigation retrofit harness from a 99 to 01 and code to factory nav to use grom in a 95 to 98 car.
