I was told that I could could increase horsepower 15% by swapping the intake manifold on my 2000 2.8L Z3 for a manifold from a 2001 2.5L. I was told that the swap was essentially plug and play with no other required mods. The reasoning was that Germany had some emissions regulations back in 2000 that required them to detune the 2.8's, and that ended prior to the 2001 models, thus a less restrictive manifold on the post 2000 models.
Can anyone confirm this, and tell me if I will experience any problems with the swap out. I was able to obtain a perfect manifold from a 2.5L 2001 for very little $$$ and I'd love to do this mod as long as I'm not going to experience a bunch of complicated tuning issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Your engine is M52B28TU and using MS42. You could use M50B25 intake manifold which is less restrictive, but you need to mod the intakes in the head. Additionally youŽll loose the DISA valve and need to re-route several hoses.

He was saying to use the M54 intake manifold on m52tu. It is a common swap. I put a M54B30 (330i) intake manifold on my Z3 with M52TUB25 and messed with the MS42 tune quite a bit till it had an acceptable powerband.

Well, its may be common, but its also useless! Only M54B30 has bigger intake runners, so the myth of using 2.5L intake is from M50 engine which has a much bigger intake compared to M54B30.
This is what you will want:
Something like this:
leinad writes something whats not with sense ! A m52 tu is better tuned with a M54 b30 manifold and a adaptorplate for the half electrical throttlebody from the m52 tu with the small diameter , IŽve done that with a tuned software we ve got 220hp at the engine ( not whp )
Once again you suffer from reading carefully
So you also got the comparison to the old M50B25 intake? If so, please upload the dyno sheets for comparison. Otherwise your statement just doesnŽt hold anything!
Unfortunally you are so self-assured that you canŽt even read the facts iŽm posting!
Anyone have something to add to this ? Even a good link to another posting with information on this topic would be appreciated.
For your 2.8, M54B30 manifold retro fit, with a tune will get you good power. Without tq loss if tuned right.
I don't think I would want to lose DISA, because it makes a good difference in torque.
