Just a quick update. The car is running flawlessly and I'm loving every second behind the wheel. The Active Autowerke tune is still dropping a lot of jaws!

So Active Autowerke bested Dinan and Alpina, without changing cams or displacement specs?
    Diehard E39 driver.
I'd rather die or take a walk before driving an E60 or any BMW made after Y2K.

so, active say 15 HP (to the crank not to the wheels), so basically you told us with a custom exhaust and "free flow" intake you gain 70 HP (to the crank not to the wheels)?

Sorry but that link refers to the newer E39. (2004-10)
The engine in this E39 is a one year only M62 4.4 litre V8. It has a better intake manifold, better timing assembly and a lack of VANOS that the '98+ M62TU all had. This car was rated at 282bhp and 310lb/ft of torque at the crankshaft. At the wheels, she produced 258whp and 288wtq, and this is pretty standard. BMW may have rated on the low end, but regardless for a 1997 engine, that's not bad. Mark Tarr, owner of http://vcmauto.com/ in Victoria, BC, added a one off Active Autowerke reflash that picked the family hauler up 73whp and 60wtq over stock.

As promised, here is the most recent dyno chart for my car...

For a more detailed description of this most awesome vehicle, I invite you to read this BLOG that was written by my good friend and former owner of the car I now have the pleasure of enjoying on a daily basis.

If BMW rated your car at 282hp at the crank (flywheel), and you gained 73 whp from a tune why does that dyno say you put out 315hp from the crank?

To have gained 73whp from a tune you should have put out roughly 360hp at the crank. Roughly because if BMW rated it at 282hp but it puts down 258 that's roughly a 9% loss through drivetrain.

You must be doing some sort of special math the rest of us aren't privileged enough to know...

All being said, 315hp to the crank is respectable for a 20 year old Naturally aspirated engine with an intake, exhaust and tune. I would be pleased with that flat torque curve too! Looks like a lot of fun.

If your interested, the M62TU that came with VANOS were rated at 290hp and 325ft-lb. The variable valve timing helps with the compromise of the valves being too small at lower RPM thus achieving more torque in the bottom half of the rev range. The top end (4000rpm+) is roughly the same as the non VANOS motors though.

One thing I have wondered about since I purchased my E39 is when I am traveling and I depress the clutch there is a steady pulsating. Shifting and engagement all works superbly so should I be concerned?

Sorry to see your misfortune.....hate to say it but I’d be surprised if ICBC doesn’t write the car off. Let us know how it works out.

ICBC now owns the car. The boys at https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...FFbLMaWkpTtxgt are going to bid on possession.
