I purchased this E38 just over 4 years ago as a temporary daily driver while I worked on a project car. It was not my original intent to have this car as long as I have, but it turned out to be the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am selling because I’m on the hunt for another car and need to make room. I’ll also be listing my M-Sport 528iT in the next week or so, one of them will have to find a new home. I’m only interested in trades for a 2003 540i M-Sport or possibly a 2001 740i M-Sport. I have a full Dinan supercharger kit collecting dust on the shelf and I’m looking for the right car in which to install it.
Mechanical Highlights: This car is tight and runs strong. I wouldn’t hesitate drive it anywhere.
- 61,000 – New control arms, steering linkage, tie rod ends and sway bar links
- 61,000 – Oil/filter change
- 58,000 – New Kumho tires
- 50,000 – Cooling system overhaul with all aluminum thermostat housing
- 45,000 – New fuel pump
- 43,000 – New auxiliary A/C fan
- 40,000 – Transmission Flush with Redline
- 40,000 – Full tune up (plugs, fuel filter, air filter, cooling system flush, brake fluid flush, oil change)
Mechanical Imperfections:
- The high intensity head lamp washer nozzle on the passenger side is broken. The system otherwise works just fine.
- Occasionally on a cold start, it will take 2 rounds of cranking to get it started. The car has been this way since purchase and I have never been able to pinpoint the problem. I thought the new fuel pump would do the trick.
Interior notes: The car is really nice inside. All features work as they should EXCEPT for the auto dimming rearview mirror, the cup holders and the map pockets behind the front seats don’t retract as they should.
- Leather: 9 out of ten, there is some fading on the center arm rest.
- Perfect dash, door cards and center console. There are a few typical cracks in the wood trim.
- All power accessories operate as they should.
- Cold A/C and Hot Heat. All HVAC controls work as they should.
- No pixel issues on the cluster and only minor pixel loss on the mid.
- Headliner is in good shape, but the parcel shelf has come loose.
Exterior notes: The pictures are really flattering; but overall I’d probably give it a 6 out of 10. Maybe even a 5. I bought this car sight unseen with only 39,000 miles. The paint was obviously neglected, the driver’s side fender was dented and the hood had major clear coat issues. I replaced the fender and hood and polished it up. It’s better, but still has issues.
- There are touch ups all over the place. Whoever did it used flat paint and a brush.
- There is a minor dent on the middle molding of the driver’s side rear door.
- There are scratches and key marks on many panels.
- The paint on the hood, roof and trunk are all a bit faded.
- Trim on the back bumper, passenger’s side, is missing.
- Door jambs are clean.
- Chrome is in good shape
- Plastic trim and door seals are all in good shape
- All glass is in great shape
Bottom line, if you are looking for a great daily with a really nice interior and don’t want to worry about door dings and such, this is the car for you!
