Sorry for diging this out.. But I have read the whole thread and i cant find answer to my question which bothers me, can i drive without the fan and use air condition?
Will ac actualy work?
Currently trying to fix my ac and don't know if fan is the thing that i should start with.
The fan is very important to AC function and efficiency.
The heat from the condenser must be blown off in order to remove it from the evaporator inside the climate box.

It should work but as Able mentioned not as efficiently as it should. While you’re moving it may cool ok but in slow or stopped traffic not so much. Are there any Zs in salvage yards nearby ? Look to see if your compressor is engaged when you turn on the ac.

I have to say that running AC without the AC fan is asking for trouble such as engine overheating. But if you must, be sure to turn off the AC at stop-and-go traffic unless you planning on replacing the head gasket anytime soon.

E36 fans are the same, but in a different housing
To use an E36 fan you can simply unbolt the E36 fan from it's housing and install it onto the Z3 assembly

Bimmerbreaker thanks for posting this. I’m in the same boat. My aux fan is on its last legs and I don’t want to spend $600 on a part for a $2000 car. But I can probably salvage an e36 fan and gut it!
My aux fan was "broken". Took it out, cleaned it out well with electronic parts cleaner and it's worked great for years.

Zetku im going to do this job this coming Monday. I can post up some pics. I’m taking the Z3 aux fan apart and installing an e36 fan into the housing. I couldn’t find a z3 fan for less than $600. Just let me know what you need pictures of or I will just try to get general pics of the wiring inside the fan.
Did you end up getting any pictures? Specifically of the wiring that this thread talks about?
