That is awesome DokB, CONGRATS!!
Indeed, it will be SUPER weird to have a car that is potentially gaining in value. How strange...
One of my best friends is trying to convince me that I should grab some p-car (non-front-engine), and build it into some sort of a monstrosity of the sort I tend to do. But I gather I can't afford a 911, and then at the very least I would need a strong gearbox. Sounds like I'm out of the p-car game before I started, doesn't it? I kind of think the only possibility would be a Boxter S or Cayman S, probably either way some sort of a salvage deal.
For now I'm pretty excited to do even more strange and monstrous things with my E36 S-box this winter and next year. (I won a season pass/entry for all of the MiDrift events last year, and I don't want to squander any of those free entries! Lol)
By the way DokB, have you settled on a forum on which to document your build? I will subscribe and watch.
i think if you plan to build a monstrous pcar, a 996 c2 tip is right up your alley. cheap, plentiful, automatic. but a Cayman S is a hell of a car. if i didn't have a childish hangup about wanting a g-series 911, i'd've gotten a 987 for sure and had a more reliable, better performing, but less charming, car.
i have not picked a forum yet. i have joined 3 though! so i'm trying to get a feel for them, and then get a jump on the 911 resto before i go bragging about how wonderful i am. i recognize that the 911 is going to be a painfully slow build. so i have lots of time. and i have already been taking a lot of pictures. if you click on any of my pics, they should take you to my flickr and from there, you can see all the snaps i've taken to date.
Thad, once i get to the point of engine planning, i'm going to be picking your brain about MS. as badly as i want to do PMO carbs, i also want to be able to drive the damned thing into the mountains and i'm concerned about elevation changes necessitating re-jetting mid road trip. so that leaves single TB FI or ITBs. because my time with CIS is limited and counting down. (still haven't started this thing btw.)

Sounds good! I'll be happy to consult on the MS project to the best of my ability. I'm going to try to get this next one built yet this winter while the weather is sh#tty so I can slap it in the LRS and crank up the power when I get the TH400 in it. It's been so damn cold up here though that I've been a little btch just hiding out indoors for the most part lately, so no TH400 progress yet. Regarding slushboxes vs. not, I've actually been kind of enjoying the 540 with the 6-spd lately now that I have a reasonably strong clutch in it and redid the shifter everything. So I guess I'm low on manual transmission hate today...
As for the Porsche stuff, I think the only thing I'm seeing in a price range that I could possibly be interested in are smashed up Boxters. If I could find a blown motor Cayman I might be interested in that if the price was right. I'd probably swap a Honda drivetrain into it. Lol
Most likely I will hold off and just concentrate on my current sh1tboxes to get me through this year of free drifting event entries I won somehow. After that I will see what sort of nonsense moves me. I think I want to take a FWD drivetrain and stick it in the rear of a car. Since I've never tried a Honda, I'd kind of like to do that. Sorry for the random blathering, happy New Years Eve Day!
It was -12°F on my way into work this morning.
and a blown K series in a boxster or Cayman would be a hoot!

Looking good DokB, I'm subscribed!
By the way, I kind of dig that ride looking S#!tty. I'd probably go for a rusty patina look and rock that mutha!! Lol
what made it smell so bad?

Man, rescuing that thing looks like it would burn cash like LS1-swapping an e36 M3 and then selling it immediately. Oh, wait....
So, honest question: what is the appeal of this project? You can get in cheap and then spend money as it becomes available? In the end I'd guess it would be significantly cheaper to just buy a nice one right now, although that obviously requires a significant outlay up front.
Nearly every day I thank my lucky stars that I haven't been bitten by the P-car bug at all. I cannot explain it--maybe it's preservation instinct because I simply know I cannot afford one. Ever.

Nice build!
I've had a '66 901 for yearrrrrsss...and my dad and I are finally biting the bullet and having a local air cooled guy finish it. (Growing up means no free time anymore )
I'll be following! Best of luck!
Thanks for the long read! I feel like I just lived vicariously through your adventures! Best of luck with your Porsche project which I will now be lurking through as well.
I've got a M3 LTW project you. You're the kind of person I'd like to see the car go to.
Thad, you're my spirit animal.
thanks! it's gonna be a long road, but one of my goals is to do all the work myself. (assistance from friends notwithstanding)
it was a lot of fun. that is something i will not give up for love or money. cars are supposed to be fun. the 911 build thread had a decent weekend, btw.
as tempting as that is, i'm devoting all funds to MTB trips and 911 parts at present. (girl scout cookies are already paid for)

All good, I've a line on '74 targa with a fresh Farmer built motor ... I find classic P-cars to be quite charming.
Mini resurrection of this thread to proposition everyone with dual-citizenship to BF.c and PelicanParts.
Vote for my 911 build thread please and thanks!
