Have you seen this about the VW checksums:

And the TunerPro plugin for the BMW ME7 checksums:

Yep. That 'blah blah blah' will always get you up here in the land of the nanny state.
I've printed my INPA Info and Ient. I have still the original software from April 2000, if 'm reading this right.
Software number 7508923; Officialnumber: 1438454 (what ever that is)
Assembly number: 7508922
BMW Part number: 7506366
Production Number: 000095718
None of those numbers show up under DK726 in the ECU family in WINKFP. I guess I need to be hooked up to the car, and, as you say - do Update ZUSB under Comfort mode.
When I do that - will WINKFP, at some point, say what is being written? When I look in Realoem for my car, The part number is (1214)-7539296 with the "ended" being (1214)-7522772. The 7539296 is in WINKFP under EK726. The other number is not (cause it's long gone, I guess). These numbers are shown as "Assembly identification number" in WINKFP. Mine is 7508922 in INPA - so it's really really old and out of date, I guess.
Bottom line is that I don't have the latest version. I wonder what fixes were made and if there is anywhere to see what the difference would be?
In any case, thank you and The Phantom very much for your advice and assurances. I appreciate it a lot.

I've never heard of any big deal w/ updates for the M62TU. They tend to be things like minor tweaks to throttle profile or idle or warmup conditions, and tweaks to the {ahem insert VW joke} emissions (but srsly yes they make tweaks for emissions sometimes).
There are certainly times (and speaking generally here not about BMW ECU's exclusively) when newer isn't better, but I haven't heard of any issues or problems with updating to the latest latest and I think you would have heard if there was some issue like "the old ECU's had better DBW...." So go for it.

Thanks GG. I'll do it this week and post something in my good, bad, ugly thread.
If your programmed data is too old it won't show as 0da or 0pa file in Ek726 directory, but you can look up the *.HIS file and search for your ZUSB, then you get OLD1,NEW1, and often some rows lower you get NEW1,NEWER2 etc. this is how WinKFP finds out the newest ZUSB for your car.
Anyways we tested TCU flash of course with a modified ECU by me. If enough ppl interested i think it's possible to do create a 0da tune for your ME7. There are some kinds of options, i normally do:
- VMAX
- idle rpm a little higher
- max rpm higher, often around 6600-6800
- electric thermostat forced to open at 90°C and not at 113°C
- ignition and injection tuning (but i would leave that out!)
I'll guess most of you running US data on your cars?
It's also possible to get the E39 M5 Cluster fully working just by remapping to a proper ZUSB and then changing all data.
PM me with options and costs. I have a Canadian car (2000 540i autmatic) - so probably quite close to US data. I'll be doing the "Let WINKFP decide" update to my ME7.2 (via EK726).
I think my thermostat opens at 105 degrees C, not 113.
You're right, I don't want to mess with my ignition and injection.
I also had a CEL after they tried to download my Dinan EGS software, so I'll add a V2.0 to my problem post #54, which I did not mention previously. This may or may not have any relevance for future readers - basically what happened on my car is at some point the PO of my 540i had the transmission software updated by an aftermarket software like Autologic, Carsoft, etc......With this aftermarket update the, code of ones and zeros do not match the factory BMW software code of ones and zeros, it is ever so slightly different. The Dinan's tune in my case was looking for the factory code of ones and zeros and if it does not match, the Dinan software will not take completely and give comm errors.
The solution in my case was for the dealer to reflash the EGS with the BMW software update, then once that was done, the Dinan tune was 100% accepted on my EGS. Unfortunately it took 25x longer than the allotted time to come to that understanding, but better late than never as they say. The Dinan dealer said that they even use the Autologic software for key remote programming, light settings, etc.... but when they have to update the software for the 'guts' of the car such as the DME or EGS, they always pass it on to the BMW dealer as the aftermarket software updates can be unreliable at times.

You can see your part number listed here.
If you update with winkfp, it will look at the .HIS history file, and cross reference ...922 which becomes ...777, becomes ...772 and eventually ...296.
WinKFP will only hold the latest versions so you won't see old numbers listed.

hi whiteghost1,
what was your value for the DME rev limiter that solved it? I tried to set the DME rev limiter to 6250, 6300, 6400 and 6500 rpm. the Problem still stayed (shifting bouncing at WOT, in Manual it goes to tranny safe mode after reaching the redline).
I tried both - Dinan EGS file and Alpina B10 V8 EGS file
I am running a 540SC with 3.15 M5 LSD diff
thx
Just an update for me. I did WINKFP for the DME nd have the 'latest version' running there. Because of the Alpina / DME rev limiter conflict when in manual, I didn't keep the ALPINA EGS but went back to the one that came with the car WINKFP tells me it does have the 'most recent' version of the software.
I understand that Turner will soon be offering a Conforti Shark Tune for the 540i and I may try that. (No PMs from anyone in spite of asking).

So I recently sold my 5HP24 auto trans to a guy and included my Dinan EGS module. He loves how it shifts, but even after modifying his DME to a higher 6400rpm RPM limiter, he says he gets a "no shift" condition at full throttle. Any ideas how to fix this without telling him to go buy a Dinan tune for his DME?

I guess the guy who bought the trans and EGS will have no choice but to buy my M62 with Dinan tune included...

My thinking on this is that a buffer zone may be needed.
I strongly suspect that VF did not alter the redline with the tune from stock, as there wouldnt be much need with the stock auto shift points. However now with the Alpina flash, I can shift at 6300-6350 in manual mode, which I think is due to there being a 200-300 rpm buffer zone in the stock dme software. To auto shift at 6500rpm in manual/steptronic mode it may require a 6700rpm DME cutoff? This is guess work but I will see what happens when Frank tunes my car.
VF leaves the rpm limiter in their VF SC DME files at stock (6200) except if you ask them to raise it in advance (at least they did with mine so).
I tried Dinan and Alpina EGS files on my SC 540iAT with values for the DME limiter at 6200 to 6500 and still have issues autoshifting in Manual mode when using the Alpina EGS file.
With the dinan EGS it runs into fail mode running Manual mode and having it WOT or almost WOT but not having the kickdown switch active (basicly running in one fix gear and almost reaching the max rpm, thats how Dinan designed it in order to have the full control over gear / not Auto switching at max rpm in Manual mode).
Could it realy be that Dinan set their DME rpm limiter at 6700-6800rpm for a stock M62 block (Alpina did change the crankcase and Pistons and rods for their B10 V8)?
cheers

That would be news to me. My DME (older version before they went in-house to "Hex Tunes") is at 6800 and I know most of the other guys w/ new kits over here have high limiters.
The M62TU gives zero forks about being spun to that point w/ a blower on it, it is perfectly safe. Dinan decidedly did the same thing (which VF in fact probably copied when they did the first kits...) you can see it on any / all dynos you dig up on innerwebz.
If the base kit is 6200 now that's a screw job by VF as the car is really making good power up there w/ the blower and is perfectly safe, but then again they've been a bit inconsistent and mixed up on their tunes lately it seems. But maybe indeed it's an auto-tranny-version thing to keep the revs down for the EGS match...

This threat is about auto/steptronic revs (rpm issues Alpina EGS with DME)
I just double checked in the files:
stock BMW E39 540 with steptronic DME 5.2 rpm limiter is set to 6100 rpm (0x505F = 24400dez/4=6100rpm)
VF tuned SC file for their kit (tuned in April 2010) DME rpm limiter set at 6100rpm (why should they even raise the DME rpm limiter if they don't provide a EGS file with raised shifts for the steptronic).
I asked them back then if they can do something for the SC customers with E39 540 steptronic and they said no except they privide a smaller pulley to compensate the lower boost since 6 speed applications do rev higher and because of that get more peak boost.
Who can point out, that Dinan does set the DME rpm limiter to above 6500 rpm with their Sc kit (for steptronic cars)
Sorry to revive this thread - but on a related note: My 528i has the GS83.4 EGS in it and I can't find anything in WINKFP or my SPDATEN that relates to it. I've seen GS834.ipo files but not the *.dat that would show the software and assembly numbers for updates.
the car is a 1998 with production in 1997. Did these things not exist that far back or do I just have a poor man's set of E39 spdaten?

Can I do this flash on my 2000 e38 sport pkg?
Look at the programmed part number of your EGS and see if it's the same as on the 540s, using Realoem.

Any benefit on a stock car?? And I will loose sport mode? Seems it just defaults to sport mode?
