The easiest approach is an ICOM interface ($300-500), and then you can run any more modern Windows and the latest EDIABAS and BMW standard tools. This would work with all the BMW software. ICOM connects to the laptop via Ethernet port, so it's much simpler. ICOM communicates all the various diag protocols in all BMWs.
Alternatively, you can get the ADS interface on a true serial port, but it has been a challenge to find one and get it working correctly. They do work, but there are difficulties involved.
