    E30NJ's 2000 528iT---> 530iT/5 Speed Swap M54 Powered!

So I was in the market for a 5 Series Wagon, the 3 Series Wagon just didn't do it for me. My mom found this on craigslist for $1900 O.B.O, and said that it had some mechanical issues (CEL Light, Wheel Bearings, Tune-Up, General Maintenance). 225K on the clock (Just breaking it in!)

    Christ...

    Swapped Coils and Stuff

    All done!

    Beautiful work, very comprehensive!

It looks like the wiring was the trickiest part here. The mechanicals look like a piece of cake, no custom fabbing or anything.

Just catching up on this one. Groovy daddy. Was wondering why so much wiring mess for a second but then remembered MS42->43. Man that Touring was so tired and beat and neglected when you got it. Whoever owned that car did nothing to anything ever to take care of it and deserves face punching. There's enough varnish in that engine to refinish the library at Downton Abbey 4 times over. Holy crap. Well it's gone now thankfully.

Change your sig bro, you now can proudly roll the rare and desirable "530iT5MT"...

530iT: the E39 BMW neglected to bring to the NA market. If federalization cost for the NA market were relevant, BMW should have opted to drop the 525iT instead.

Not that I'm complaining though ;-)

Absolutely amazing work, skills and dedication ! I don't even know what a 'wrench' is !

Looking forward to updates on this!

Will you be keeping the car as oem looking as you can? mild upgrades and mods? or perhaps some more modifying touches to make it your 'own' car?!

Alpine White E39 Tourings FTW !

    Cheers, Dennis!

    Time to go light hunting...

    Parts!

Oil Pressure Sensor. Didn't fix light, has to do with M54 wiring...

    Whala!

hehehehe. Best E39 528i Brake Upgrade!

Had some 530i parts laying around...

530i Front Brakes vs. 528i Stock Brakes

It's tight but it fits with stock wheels

    Yeaaaa

Did some rear suspension work too!

    Everythang new.

    Junk.

Did rear ball joints, PITA. Did rear guide links and control arms and it rides AMAZING!

What a project, you really brought the initial touring back from the dead. It really had 3 wheels in the grave! Great work

fantastic update! it's going to be a very minty fresh Touring by the time you are complete!

Do you fancy sending me the spare alpine white rear number plate recess cover in exchange for some Dollerz?!

    Cheers, Dennis!

Here we go with some updates.
CEL was driving me nuts. Found out it had to do with the DMTL Pumps/Module between the 528i/530i.
    528i- Uses diagnostic "pump"
530i- Uses Diagnostic "module" (I guess its a more intelligent system to detect leaks)

    New 530i "Module"

And the old style 528i "Pump" and old style plug to go along with it. 530i "Module" needs the new style plug. No problem, simple electronics.

Got the new style plug from a 04 330i in the junkyard for $20, oh well.

If you are thinking about doing this swap, you NEED this book.

You can pull apart these plugs and it really helps to routes the wires.

Difference between new style plug (left), and old style (right), different wire configurations.

    Repinning new plug

    Done

    Like OEM

    Old "pump" vs. New "module"

How to buy "iffy" hose from NAPA

Had to cap off old vacuum hose, it's no longer needed.

    All back together

    Lights out, WOOHOO

OMG when is this thread gonna roll to another effin page - on lame wifi it takes 1/2 hr to load all the pix! Particularly on a stupid tablet browser where you cant scroll down and read while it loads stuff "up top" without it jumping all over the place.

Great DMTL post man, that is good ref for somenbody in future wrestling w that issue...

Crazy man. I wish I could hire a photographer to take photos while I wrench away lol. Dennis wrench = spanner..... What a great conversion! If your not super crazy about keeping stock look I would look at RVAE34 528 to LSX swap cause he updated his bumpers to m technic, headlight update, and painting his trim to high gloss shadowline. These are items the stock newer ones had, but maybe worth checking out. I'm super impressed by the diagnosis and repair of the recent service engine soon light. Well done sir, bravo!!!

Yea its probably the toughest part about this swap, figuring out how to wire in new systems.

Are any of the tan plastic trim pieces that surround the hatch glass on the inside still good (with tabs intact)? I need those panels if so. New pricing is ridiculous.
