    ZF 4HP22 transmission swap

I have a bad ZF 4HP22EH transmission in a '90 car, but a good ZF 4HP22 (not the EH version) transmission in an '85 car, both with M30 engines.

Can I use the valve body from the 4HP22EH transmission on the 4HP22 transmission, and will it work properly?

In other words, swap in the 4HP22 and mate it to the EH valve body and wiring harness.

    Gday All,

Im also keen to hear from anyone that may have done this conversion. I have the opportunity to pick up a non EH cheap. Parts are hard to come by out my way, so another Trans is always handy.

Someone might correct me if I am wrong, but: If the old 4HP22 from 1985 has no speedo cable, one could transfer the transmission as it is. Then you should install the kick down cable. But one cannot make out of a MANUAL 4HP22 a EH = electro-hydraulic transmission and vice versa. The "manual" 4HP22 has a manual torque converter, that means it does the job manual and not like the EH electro-hydraulic.

OP: I have a complete low mileage tranny ~(60,000 miles) and am only 1-2 hours away from you, if you are interested.
I'm sure we can work out a good deal that is fair for the both of us; PM me if you'd like to discuss.

I doubt it very much. Two issues off the top of my head:

    1. There won't be any galleries for the ATF to flow between the 4HP22 clutches and a valve body because it wasn't designed to work like that
    2. You can't even secure the valve body to a 4HP22 as there will not be any tappings for the screws

You could probably swap in the 4HP22. ditch the TCM and program the ECU accordingly. But as the 4HP22EH is getting on a bit, the non EH must be ready to put on its carpet slippers and retire.

So does the conversion chart mean that I can take the
    E28 528e 1981 - 1987 M20/B27 4HP22 1043 010 ___ out of my 1987 E28 and put it into a E32 1992 735i 11 / 89 - 02 / 92 ZF - 4HP22EH 1043 010 716?

    Thanks in advance!

That is too complicated in my opinion, your 1992 E32 735 has a newer version E-9. First of all, the 1992 valve body has a 7-pin port.
The Electronic Control system was first introduced in 1986 and was incorporated into the totaly hydraulic 4HP-22 unit produced by ZF. It combines the hydraulic control of forward and reverse gear engagement, with electronic control for automatic upshifts from 1st thru 4th and automatic downshifts from 4th thru 1st gears. Three different versions of valve bodies have been used on BMW vehicles, with minor differences between them.

The 1st version, designated Early "E-7", has 5 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in 1986 and used up thru 1989. This version includes a solenoid for reverse lockout.

The 2nd version, designated Late "E-7", has 5 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in 1988 and used up thru Mid-1989. This version includes a solenoid for reverse lockout.

The 3rd version, designated "E-9", has 4 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in Mid-1989 and used up thru 1994. This version uses a shift solenoid for the reverse lockout function.

valve bodies are different, trans control modules are different.
